The Communications Specialist II, under general supervision, provides a broad range of communications, administrative and game management support to the various sports and services of the Athletic Department. Staffs many athletics events, matches and games, and provides communications and media relations support. Responsible for statistics and notable accomplishments of their assigned team(s). Creates content and uses social media to tell the stories of the student-athletes, teams, and Texas A&M. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of related media relations and/or communication experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Demonstrated writing ability.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • Travel required and ability to work nights, holiday, and weekends.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree
  • At least two years of experience in related field such as media relations, sports information, communications, public relations, digital media or journalism.
  • Work experience in an athletics media relations/communications department.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Sports statistical knowledge, desktop publishing.
  • Knowledge of StatCrew, NCAA LiveStats, Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrated writing skills, interview skills, general photography/digital images, basic website management.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Event/Team Coverage - Serves as the primary or second Athletics Communications staff member at Texas A&M home and road athletics events. Provides social media content and coverage. Keep statistics, as needed. Writes event recaps for 12thMan.com and media distribution. Facilitates post-event media opportunities for student and coaches.
  • Media Relations - Serves as the liaison between Texas A&M’s student-athletes, teams and coaches and the local, state and national media that covers them. Facilitates mid-week media opportunities for students and coaches. Write previews and general press releases, as needed.
  • Social Media - Develops social media plan/tone for assigned teams. Creates content for three main platforms used by Texas A&M Athletics – Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Seeks new ways of engaging student-athletes and fans.
  • Website Maintenance - Maintains information on assigned teams for 12thMan.com, including facility information and biographical information for student-athletes, coaches and staff
  • Desktop Publication - Use Adobe Creative Suite to create/maintain game programs/flyers. Updates social graphic templates.
  • Compliance - Maintains continual and thorough familiarity with all applicable NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations. Maintains awareness of and supports the diversity and inclusion initiatives of the Athletics Department. Performs other duties as assigned.
