Job Description:

Are you a communications professional who wants to be inspired daily and surrounded by some of the most creative students, faculty, and staff in the nation? The Student Innovation Center is seeking qualified candidates for a Communications Specialist I.

The Communications Specialist will be an integral member of the newly established Student Innovation Center team and will work directly with the Director of Innovation Programs. The SICTR officially launched a comprehensive suite of extracurricular programs that engaged more than 20,000 registrants in 2020 alone. This is a job for someone that likes to build and create in a start-up environment with fast turnaround of program opportunities.

Example of Duties:

  • Build a communications and media program for the Student Innovation Fellows Program.

  • Collaborate with the existing communications team and work with the Innovation Team to generate promotional/marketing content

  • Manage social media presence

  • Coordinate media relations

  • Develop and update the website

  • Manage networks for internal and external communications about programs

  • Organize and consistently brand all existing materials that will be used in future programming

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, have excellent project management abilities, and have experience working in diverse and vibrant environments.

The Student Innovation Center is the nexus on campus that inspires students, faculty, and staff to innovate through experimentation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the free exchange of ideas in an inclusive environment.  The center is a resource serving the entire university community with unique facilities and workspaces to foster innovation across all aspects of Iowa State’s land-grant mission. It provides a welcoming and vibrant environment where all university stakeholders can find resources to foster new ideas, creativity, experimentation, evaluation, and entrepreneurship, especially at the intersection of traditional disciplines.


Level Guidelines

  • Individual contributor position with developing professional and/or technical skills working under immediate to general supervision

  • Grasps professional-level knowledge and concepts of field while working in a progressive learning mode

  • Works on problems and issues of somewhat limited scope

  • Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data for which answers are available or can be obtained

  • Responds to inquiries and issues, escalating to manager or higher level workers as appropriate

  • May lead projects of limited scope and complexity

  • May provide guidance to students
