Job Description

ASU's Global Security Initiative (GSI) seeks a self-motivated and well-organized Communications Specialist who will work closely with the Knowledge Enterprise Manager of Marketing and Communications to provide support for their brand portfolio. Daily responsibilities will include managing and monitoring primary communication channels, writing and distributing informative content for GSI’s target audiences, executing marketing plans, and working to achieve greater awareness across the university and beyond. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the Knowledge Enterprise Strategic Marcomm team and Global Security Initiative, to provide the highest quality of support in alignment with GSI’s strategic goals of advancing national security research.

Salary Range

$49,133 - $63,874 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Plans, develops, and produces creative, high-quality impact-driven communications for GSI audiences (e.g., faculty, staff, students, donors, prospective students, and the general public) using multiple media and tools (e.g., print, events, press releases, advertisements, Web, displays, and merchandise) in support of the broader brand goals, as defined by the Knowledge Enterprise Manager of Marketing and Communications and GSI Leadership.
  • Serves as a writer and editor for ASU News Stories, internal client newsletters, social media posts, brochures, mailers, advertising e-newsletters, web content, and blog posts.
  • Works with concepts of GSI’s core research areas: national security, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, dis/misinformation and homeland security.
  • Maintains a high level of discretion: this person will be privy to sensitive communications and must be trustworthy and understand the importance of confidentiality.
  • Maintains communication and marketing resources repository in collaboration with the Knowledge Enterprise Manager of Marketing and Communications.
  • Maintains a consistent flow of content across the organization’s social media platforms, ensuring alignment with KE Marcomm Social Media guidelines.
  • Frequently connects with Global Security Initiative’s research units to understand top priorities, research agendas and what they mean for GSI’s target audiences. 
  • Coordinates and collaborates with stakeholders to drive the completion of annual marketing plans and related tactics for the main client portfolio.Assures consistency in language and design of all communication and marketing efforts including all media and publicly disseminated information.
  • Manages projects, including day-to-day functions (coordination and integration of information) as well as long range planning and design, working with KE Marcomm to ensure client expectations align with service level agreements and department capacity.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, Education or a related field AND three (3) years of related work experience in the development of comprehensive and creative communication; OR seven (7) years of related work experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.  Certificates from recognized programs that verify mastery of tools and techniques relevant to the assignment may substitute for up to six (6) months of experience.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in using time management skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure while handling multiple, shifting and often competing priorities.
  • Experience in using interpersonal and communication skills, as well as having a good understanding of internal relationships and workflow.
  • Experience understanding social media platforms and best practices for managing profiles and measuring impact.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and assignments based on potential impact vs. time commitment.
  • Knowledge of ASU and/or AP style a plus.
  • Skill in composing, editing, and proofreading written materials. 
  • Skill in writing and editing blog posts. 
  • Skill in planning and implementing communications programs. 
  • Skill in the use of communication and marketing software applications such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Hootsuite.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and practices of graphic design and desktop publishing.

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being stationary and moving between office spaces.
  • Position requires use of computer (desktop and/or laptop).
  • May be required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
