Job Description

The Earth BioGenome Project (EBP) Communications Specialist oversees outreach communications for the EBP. They will be responsible for developing and sharing news stories about EBP and the value of EBP-generated genome resources through blog posts, social media, in the press, as well as website management. Reporting to the EBP Executive Director, and the EBP Executive Council Chair, the Communications Specialist will be part of a centralized team to support the EBP’s global Secretariat. Successful candidates will be comfortable generating content that highlights EBP priorities, achievements, research, and scope.

Deliverables include web content, social media posts, quick-hitting news stories, and long-form features about the scientific and social impacts of the EBP, and the people who are leading and managing the effort. In addition, the Communications Specialist will work with ASU Development to create content for fundraising. The Communications Specialist will maintain copy editing standards. The ability to align deliverables with agreed-upon communication strategies is essential, as is the ability to make revisions as directed. The ideal candidate will thrive as a collaborative and vocal member of the EBP Secretariat who is committed to sharing the EBP’s successes.

Salary Range

$49,133 - $63,874 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

Plans, develops, and produces creative, high-quality communications and presentations for EBP audiences (e.g., faculty, staff, students, donors, and the general public) using multiple media and tools (e.g., press releases, websites, newsletters, Powerpoint presentations, and social media). Advises EBP leadership on effective marketing communications and public relations matters. Participates in strategic communications planning with the EBP Communications and Public Affairs Committee. Serves as the Project Manager, writer, and editor for EBP newsletters, web content, press releases, and annual reports. Supports the communication needs of the EBP membership and the EBP Executive Council. Interfaces with and conducts regular interviews with EBP representatives, key stakeholders, project leads/managers, and team members to develop stories for publication and market content. Oversees content for the website; manages website updates. Ensures timeliness of all information, and coordinates content updates with EBP Affiliated Projects. Coordinates media placement and directs the development, content, and design of communication for the EBP's website and programs. Creates graphics for reports and multimedia presentations. Promotes equity by highlighting and sharing stories from underrepresented groups.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, Education or a related field AND three (3) years of related work experience in the development of comprehensive and creative communication; OR seven (7) years of related work experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.  Certificates from recognized programs that verify mastery of tools and techniques relevant to the assignment may substitute for up to six (6) months of experience.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 15 pounds.
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicting priorities.
