Summary

The Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology is seeking a Communications Specialist to advance the mission of the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), Department of Molecular Virology & Microbiology using internal communications, web-based and social media strategies, and community outreach opportunities. The Communications Specialist proactively identifies and recruits from pediatric and adult populations for potential enrollment into vaccine, treatment, non-interventional, or other clinical research trials.

 

This is a full-time position with time split between the office setting and community engagement events.
 


Job Duties
  • Prepares and distributes original content such as emails, blog posts and social media posts, and other updates on behalf of the department and assists with communication projects, in coordination with the Office of Communications and Community Outreach as necessary.
  • Assists with development of and updates to BCM VRC websites, webpages, e-communications, forms, etc.
  • Edits all content of any social media posts, in coordination with the College’s social media manager, as well as articles, updates, and letters to participants. This includes accuracy, completeness and consistency of VRC and Baylor College of Medicine brand messages.
  • Conducts research of current trends that can be implemented strategically to reach the department’s communications goals.
  • Acts a liaison with the Office of Information Technology and Office of Communications and Community Outreach on web-based communications.
  • Identifies and establishes new contacts as recruitment resources in the community.
  • Develops and/or implements creative and existing processes to increase the existing recruitment base via various communication methods.
  • Advertises for research participants through development and distribution of flyers, pamphlets, social media, etc., following College brand guidelines.
  • Attends community and health events to communicate the Vaccine Research Center mission by providing information about activities and identifying potential study participants and inviting them to participate in research projects.
  • Makes presentations at places of business to aid in communication of recruiting efforts.
  • Conducts phone pre-screenings of potential participants interested in clinical research studies.
  • Maintains and updates an information technology recruitment portfolio and database.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in clinical research setting and/or public relations-related experience.
  • Ability to understand basic medical terminology and eligibility requirements for clinical research studies and protocols.
  • Experience with computer spreadsheets and database management.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Must provide own transportation for travel in the community with mileage reimbursement.
  • Marketing/networking skills.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
