Job Description

The ASU Art Museum at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is looking for an innovative, motivated and highly talented individual working in marketing and public relations. The Communications Program Coordinator develops and implements the museum’s communication strategies, programs and project content, and materials for a variety of projects that effectively market and promote the museum’s activities. The coordinator will be an integral part of the ASU Art Museum's efforts to build a vital gathering place for campus and community audiences around art and ideas. The specialist will work to publicize and market exhibitions, artist residencies and programs to broad audiences both on and off campus and will position the museum by working with local and national media outlets.

Essential Duties

  • Under general direction and supervision, this position coordinates and manages all media relations and marketing activities for the ASU Art Museum.
  • Plans, develops and produces creative, high-quality and cost effective communications for the museum’s audiences using multiple media and tools.
  • This position focuses on the analysis, planning, creation, and implementation of materials/content to support the missions, goals and strategic planning of the ASU Art Museum and Herberger Institute, as well as on building relationships within the museum, with visiting artists, at ASU and within the community.
  • Serves as principal writer and editor of communications projects as assigned for both external and internal constituents.
  • Independently and collaboratively gathers news and information and produces content strategically promoting the museum.
  • Translates complex concepts into prose appropriate to the level of understanding of the target audience.
  • Conducts interviews with staff and researches subject matter, prepares press releases, and articles for campus publications, websites and newsletters.
  • Meets with supervisor to discuss themes and objectives for an assignment, the target audience, and desired outcomes to ensure that the assignment meets the communication goals of the museum.
  • Researches and cultivates strong relationships with both local and national arts writers and media outlets devising innovative story ideas to pitch to arts reporters and pursues new relevant outlets to share stories.
  • Maintains up-to-date contact and distribution lists to help promote and disseminate museum stories.
  • Serves as in-house copy editor, coordinates and reviews all publications and designs to enhance readability and ensure ASU brand standards.
  • Organizes and oversees media coverage, photography and video of exhibitions, programs and public events.
  • Determines target markets to expand audience and attendance, and build reputation.
  • Works closely with the ASU Art Museum and Herberger institute communications and marketing teams, faculty, key stakeholders and project leads to manage communication efforts for exhibitions, programs and events.
  • Serves as the project manager, writer and editor of museum newsletters, brochures, mailers, advertising, web content and press releases.   
  • Writes, edits, reviews and oversees design, printing, and distributes all media and marketing materials from concept to completion.
  • Works with internal and external vendors and suppliers to coordinate media placement, printing of various types of materials, and direct the development, content and design of communication for the museum’s exhibitions, programs and website. 
  • Oversees the ASU Art Museum website and social networking sites, and pursues new approaches to online media efforts.
  • Works with the Graphic design intern on the graphic visual interpretation of each exhibition, including researching and presenting visual identities, managing the graphic design of all visual materials within the galleries, and printing or procuring all materials. 
  • Ensures consistency in brand, and communicates the overall brand and information on individual projects to resources within the community and on campus.
  • Prepares reports and records about activities for the director, board, university, outside agencies and donors.
  • Serves on museum committees to ensure an excellent public experience at the museum.
  • Plans and implements departmental budget seeking cost saving solutions, and works closely with other staff on project and initiative budgets.
  • Supervise the Social Media Assistant and Graphic Design Intern.
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or closely related field and one year of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Evidence of effective writing skills (grammar, editing and proofreading).
  • Experience in writing in Associated Press (AP) Style.
  • Experience working in a team environment with multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Experience writing about the arts.
  • Experience working with reporters/media.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media best practices.
  • Experience in events management and marketing.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in cold calling.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10%)
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (15%)
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals .
  • Receives regular review of completed tasks for achievement of established objectives.
