Carnegie Mellon University’s world-class School of Computer Science (SCS) seeks a communications manager with outstanding science and technical writing skills that can present the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, computer science and technology in compelling, story-driven narratives!
In support of the School of Computer Science, its seven academic units (Computational Biology, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Language Technologies, Machine Learning, Robotics and Software and Societal Systems) and numerous labs, centers and initiatives, this position will interact regularly with department heads, faculty, thought leaders, researchers, academic program leaders, department-level communications specialists, and marketing and communications team members in the SCS Dean’s Office. The individual in this position will influence internal and external communications by leading the editorial direction of SCS. It will be this position's responsibility to find stories about research, events, awards and life at SCS and decide how best to present this content on the school’s communication channels. This position will report to the Senior Director of Media Relations and be part of the team that charts the communications strategy for the school. Your core responsibilities include:

  • Science/technical writing & news reporting - regularly interview, write and get approval of news stories, news releases and visual assets prior to publishing or distribution
  •  Story development – brainstorm and develop ideas and write content that highlights advances and trends in computer science and technology
  • Communications management – collaborate with leadership, faculty and communicators across the school and university to align content with school and university priorities
  • Media relations assistance – assist Senior Director of Media Relations with tracking and monitoring media coverage, escorting reporters and crews on campus, and facilitating incoming interview requests
  • Collaboration - work with university communication colleagues, especially when news being reported involves more than one school or may best be told from the university’s perspective rather than the school’s

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of experience in a writing-intensive communications role are required
  • Experience with developing and implementing editorial strategies, prioritizing and managing an always-full editorial calendar, interviewing subjects, simplifying sophisticated topics, covering live events and writing on deadline are required
  • AP style proficiency is crucial
  • Teamwork, organization and communications project management skills are required. This person could be asked to shoot photos or videos for use on the web and social media and assist with media relations duties.
