About the Department
DELTA’s role within the Office of the Provost is to advance the integration and support of learning technologies in NC State’s academic programs and courses, both on campus and at a distance. DELTA coordinates the funding and production of all distance-based credit programs and courses for the university, and provides enterprise academic technology and instructional support services for all modes of course delivery. Working with NC State instructors and partners, DELTA leads the way in designing, creating, implementing and supporting extraordinary digital learning experiences for our community of learners. DELTA applies expertise in technologies and pedagogies to create and nurture innovative, effective and impactful digital learning experiences for our community of instructors and learners with a collaborative, service-oriented and innovative mindset.
NC State Continuing and Lifelong Education is a key strategic leader, catalyst and partner in the development and delivery of leading-edge, market-driven continuing and lifelong education programs and services that benefit individuals, organizations and communities throughout North Carolina and beyond. The division serves as a hub of activity offering continuing and lifelong learning opportunities in face-to-face, online and hybrid modalities, utilizing professional meeting facilities for small to large groups, and providing technical assistance as well as outreach and engagement to a variety of organizations, agencies and communities.
Both DELTA and NCSCaLE are part of the Office of Instructional Programs (OIP), which provides programmatic planning and implementation of both academic and non-credit instructional programs at NC State.
Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of the Communications Manager role is to offer strategic leadership and guidance for communications within both DELTA and NCSCaLE. Collaborating with the Senior Management Teams (SMT), unit directors, and the Marketing and Communications (MarComm) team, this position will formulate, execute, and support an integrated public relations, communications, social media, branding, and marketing program to help carry out the strategic goals of both divisions. The role extends to being a co-owner of DELTA’s websites and designated NCSCaLE websites, handling publications, electronic media, contributing to environmental branding, media relations, and website content.
The Communications Manager will report to the Assistant Vice Provost for Marketing and Communications, consulting with senior management in both divisions on sensitive and strategic communications and branding issues. It offers leadership, coordination, and expertise in writing and content development for primary communications initiatives within DELTA and NCSCaLE. Additionally, the position provides guidance on campaign strategy to boost awareness and program participation, including cross-promotional efforts with other NC State entities. 
This incumbent in this role actively serves as a liaison with diverse campus divisions, including the Provost’s Office, University Communications, EMAS, the Graduate School, OIT, OFD and other communicators within colleges and units. This position functions as a representative for DELTA and NCSCaLE in various working committees across the university and consistently engages with colleagues and their communication channels to advocate for the services provided by DELTA and NCSCaLE.
  • Creates, maintains and facilitates a strategic communications plan for both DELTA and NCSCaLE.
  • Offers strategic leadership and guidance for various DELTA and NCSCaLE websites in relation to branding, content analysis, development, and analytics-based enhancements and improvements.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for marketing and communication concepts using best practices and the university brand to effectively promote the division’s programs and services.
  • Collaborates closely with the DELTA and NCSCaLE Senior Management Teams (SMT) as well as other MarComm colleagues to develop and execute innovative communication strategies for individual workgroups, programs, and units.
  • Regularly evaluates systems and processes to improve communication within and across both divisions.
  • Actively uses online project management and proofing software to aid with team communication and collaboration and to maintain documentation of efforts for continuity and assessment purposes.
  • Supervises staff, including temporary workers, and students. Conducts onboarding and continuous training to ensure employees utilize the latest methods for marketing and communications, adhering to university brand standards.
  • Provides written content for communications initiatives within DELTA and NCSCaLE, collaborating closely with DELTA colleagues in various roles such as multimedia specialists, web developers, faculty and student contact points, program coordinators, and trainers.
  • Actively promotes both divisions by writing articles, leading the creation of both divisions’ annual reports and yearly fact sheets, bulletins, newsletters and presentations that communicate the contributions of DELTA and NCSCaLE to the university community.*
  • Serves as the primary external contact at DELTA and NCSCaLE for news and communications and liaison for communicators in other campus departments and units.
  • Provides technical writing support for course content, instructional materials and instructional tools.
  • Promotes communication of key messages and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Collaborates with other DELTA and NCSCaLE brand and communication experts to oversee and update a style manual, brand book and style guides for both divisions.
  • Works closely with colleagues, leads, plans and develops content for communications channels for both divisions to ensure that content is timely, updated, fresh and has a consistent voice. 
  • Manages the DELTA News (faculty-facing) website by leading and directing research and writing efforts including content management, editorial support and administrative responsibilities.
  • Successfully fosters positive and collaborative working relationships with communicators from various campus entities, including but not limited to OIT, Libraries, colleges, and others, to enhance DELTA’s and NCSCaLE’s university partnerships in communication.
  • Uses communication tools such as MailChimp to create monthly newsletters for DELTA, create HTML emails for both internal and external communications, and maintain DELTA and NCSCaLE websites.
  • Proactively researches and keeps abreast of trends, research and opportunities in the higher education communication landscape. This includes but is not limited to digital writing, content development techniques, web communication, social networking, and communication analytics.
Other Responsibilities
  • Spearheads campaigns to improve the presence of DELTA and NCSCaLE’s services and programs on campus through collaborative networking.
  • Builds and maintains strategic collaborations with the Technical Writing program, the Campus Writing and Speaking Program, Department of Communication internship program and other key partners.
  • Contributes to outreach initiatives by providing consultations, presentations, and workshops to faculty and staff, and participating in online discussions and conferences in area of expertise.
  • Collaborates as part of a production team to create high-quality websites, graphics, audio/video, and other media.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Three years of professional experience in the communications field.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Knowledgeable in supporting digital marketing strategies, including social media, email campaigns, and other online communication channels.
  • Ability to adapt to emerging technologies.
  • Understanding of SEO (search engine optimization) and experience planning, creating and optimizing content to increase search engine rankings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A minimum of six years of professional experience in the communications field.
  • Experience in a related production environment.
  • Demonstrated success in the production of educational materials in an academic, continuing education or a training environment.
  • Experience in higher education in this field.
  • Experience managing and leading a team and/or temporary and/or student staff, as well as collaborating with cross-functional teams to achieve communication objectives.
  • Skilled in establishing and fostering a network of connections both within and beyond the organization to optimize communication possibilities.
  • Familiarity with communication tools, software, and platforms, including project management and content creation tools.
  • Master’s degree and/or advanced professional training and/or certifications in communications or a closely related field or other experiences that illustrate a commitment to professional growth.
