The University of California’s only school of international affairs, the School of Global Policy & Strategy (GPS) provides a unique resource for training leaders, creating ideas, and building networks for the Pacific Century. GPS is internationally renowned for its innovative programs,superb faculty and outstanding students and now stands among the world's top graduate schools of international relations and is the established leader in its focus on Asia and the Americas. GPS instructs a diverse student body consisting of 60% domestic and 40% international students in MPP, MCEPA, MIA, BA-MIA, MAS, joint PhD with Department of Political Science and executive education programs. GPS also administers the International Studies Program, a fast-growing interdisciplinary program with over 1700 declared undergraduate majors, that offers a rigorous curriculum for undergraduate students interested in international affairs. Offering nine B.A.degree options, three combined BA/MIA program, and a minor program, the International Studies Program explores the interaction between the international and national, global and local, contemporary and historical ideas shaping globalization. GPS is also the parent organizationto major research centers: Center on Global Transformation (CGT), Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, 21st Century China Center, Fudan-UC Center on China, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), Policy Design and Evaluation Lab (PDEL), Laboratory on InternationalLaw and Regulation (ILAR), and Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT).

With a focus on raising the school's visibility with clear communications, the GPS Communications Writer and Editor will generate engaging written content and ideas for digital, audio, and print communications. Types of communication will include articles, e-mails, press releases, and talking points, student news, alumni spotlights, faculty research, etc. Serves as project lead and primary editor at GPS regarding conferences, workshops, and reports. Proofreads and edits a variety of print and online materials prior to submission. Participates in concept development meetings and contributes to the development, writing, and editing of various informational materials. Edits and reviews material prepared by others for accuracy and appropriateness. Ensures projects meet deadlines and are within budget. Supports all special communications initiatives and projects, including remarks for the dean, community messages, crisis communications, promotional videos, plus school-wide special marketing for promotional projects, dean's speaker series or signature events. Writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives.

  • Degree in Communications, international relations, public policy or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer software applications for publishing, image handling and print production.

  • Demonstrated expertise in Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.

  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.

  • Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message.

  • Thorough knowledge of the location, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.

  • Thorough knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and / or health sciences.

  • Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web production.

  • Thorough research and fact verification skills.

  • Thorough interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills.

  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Thorough attention to detail, project management and organizational skills. Proven ability to work with a high level of independence and prioritize assignments and departmental needs to meet deadlines. Must be detail-oriented with strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Skill to maintain confidentiality.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 - $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 - $57.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
