Job Description


The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC seeks a versatile communications specialist to join a dynamic, fast-paced team that showcases world-class research and education at one of the nation’s fastest-growing academic biomedical research enterprises. The position will be based in Roanoke and will support communication projects related to Virginia Tech’s Health Science and Technology initiatives, including the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC operations in Roanoke and the Cancer Research Center in Washington, D.C. The successful candidate will be involved with researching and writing materials for internal and external distribution, basic image and graphic design processing, website maintenance, social media, email newsletters, multimedia, and conference and event support. The coordinator will support messaging for translational biomedical research by world-class scientists working to improve human health. They need to be able to work accurately and proficiently using word processing tools, the Adobe creative suite, content management systems, and social media management tools. The coordinator will report to the director of communications and collaborate with communications and administrative faculty, staff and students and partners across Virginia Tech to tell compelling stories aligned with the university’s mission, vision, values and messaging.

Required Qualifications

• Excellent communication, writing, and editing skills.
• Professional experience working in media, marketing, communications, or related field.
• Demonstrated understanding of communication skills and principles, including writing, editing, graphic design, photography/videography, visual communication, and social media.
• Strong interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple, competing projects under tight deadlines, independently and as a member of a team.


Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, media, or related field, and/or equivalent training and work experience.
• Experience working in higher education.
• Experience communicating scientific and health content to a general audience.
• Demonstrated understanding of communication and graphic design principles.
• Experience with tools such as Photoshop and InDesign.
