JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State’s Office of Strategic Communications (the University’s central news, public relations, and marketing division) seeks a communications coordinator to join its University Public Relations unit. This position has the potential to be performed remotely on a permanent basis. Any remote-working arrangements will be agreed upon after the successful candidate has been selected for the position.

Reporting to the manager of media strategy, this entry-level position will work on various public relations programs and campaigns, as well as help, implement communications tactics for media placements that enhance Penn State’s reputation and visibility. The successful candidate will also help build and maintain media lists, develop pitches, facilitate outreach to reporters, and monitor and track media placements. Additional responsibilities include evaluating social media analytics and finding and/or creating content for social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Media monitoring will include assembling high-level reports for University leadership.

We are looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, has excellent writing and editing skills, and can effectively communicate across internal and external channels, including outreach to traditional media and social media content. The person in this position will be asked to help identify current trends and topical issues that could potentially elevate the reputation of the University through visible engagement. This position also has the opportunity to take ownership of key strategic communications priorities and support more senior positions on other initiatives.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong communications, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to monitor and interpret fast-moving story developments
  • Knowledge of multi-channel media environment, communication planning, and traditional and non-traditional media strategies
  • Experience with social media listening

This position typically requires a bachelor’s degree or higher plus two or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, or related discipline is preferred. Previous experience in a university setting is not required.
