We are seeking a SMART4TB Communications Associate who will be responsible for developing and supporting communications for a ground-breaking initiative to radically improve the global response to tuberculosis. Reporting to the Communications Director, this position will liaise with and provide support to the seven technical areas within the initiative, project partners, and several regional collaboratives across the globe on communications strategies. The ideal candidate will be both an independent self-starter and a strong collaborator who is well-versed in different media strategies and how to best utilize them to reach specific audiences. Primary channels include academic publications, policy and advocacy messaging, digital media, earned media, and events.


Project Summaries

  • Supporting, Mobilizing, and Accelerating Research for Tuberculosis Elimination (SMART4TB) is a five-year cooperative agreement with the United States Agency for International Development, to identify more effective methods and tools for finding, treating, and preventing tuberculosis. SMART4TB will design and implement research studies with local partners to identify effective person-centered methods for finding, treating, and preventing TB; strengthen local capacity to conduct high-quality research; and engage communities to build demand for new interventions, drive policy change, and improve implementation of new and existing interventions to reach the End TB targets.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


External Communications

  • Meet with internal stakeholders, including senior leadership, to conceptualize, create, and edit content that promotes SMART4TB's research and policy work.
  • Liaise with funders to secure approvals on materials and provide relevant context for communications support.
  • Manage different complex streams of information about SMART4TB to create relevant content for websites, social media, and email lists, including regular newsletters, and seize overlapping opportunities between projects when relevant.
  • Design and produce visual materials including reports, study overviews, infographics, digital graphics, etc.
  • Write, edit, and proofread copy for a variety of materials and audiences, including study briefs, progress reports, event descriptions, and emails.
  • Develop ideas for storytelling opportunities across all three programs and help gather content, including photos, videos, and personal stories.
  • Assist with media relations by identifying compelling or stakeholder-valued media placement opportunities and developing and producing media advisories, press releases, interviews, etc.
  • Manage language translation of materials for different audiences as needed.
  • Support coordinating events, including developing content, prepping speakers and logistics, and post-event communications.


Internal Communications

  • Maintain and keep brand assets updated including logos, brand colors, graphics, videos, and illustrations.
  • Ensure compliance with funder regulations including archiving approved materials in the funder library.
  • Co-lead communications training for relevant stakeholders.
  • Communicate expectations and requirements for complex branding & marking and publications among consortium members to support adherence to funder and project policies.
  • Track website and social media analytics to inform communications strategies.


Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proven ability to take initiative and to work independently towards a shared goal.
  • Proven ability to juggle numerous projects and deadlines with a proactive communication style and excellent judgment regarding prioritization.
  • Demonstrated ability for designing projects ranging from reports to digital graphics and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex information into compelling communications for different audiences.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Flexibility to work occasional weekdays before/after normal East Coast business hours and rare weekends, depending on deadlines and availability of partners based in different time zones.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator, In Design, and Photoshop.

  • Familiarity with public health, clinical research, and/or health policy issues.
  • Demonstrated experience working with senior-level staff on organizationally complex projects.
  • Proven ability to work within a collaborative team in a multicultural environment where commitment to diversity and equity is a core value.
  • Commitment to using communications to advance social justice and equity.
  • Interest in subject matters covered by all three projects.

 


 

Classified Title: Communications Associate 
Role/Level/Range: ATP/04/PD  
Starting Salary Range: $62,300 - $109,000 Annually ($80,000 targeted: Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm 
Exempt Status: Exempt
