The Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute (SC CTSI) is a multifaceted resource for clinical and community-partnered translational research. The Communications group is responsible for planning and running events, service promotion, internal and external communications, marketing and PR campaigns, media relations, and highlighting success stories and initiatives from SC CTSI-supported researchers.

We are seeking a Program Specialist to support the Director of Communications with all aspects of internal and external communication, event planning, marketing, PR, social media and stakeholder engagement. The candidate will lead and coordinate internal and external communication efforts, shoot video and photo content to promote CTSIs reach and mission, plan events, design and create branded assets, and coordinate promotion/marketing within and outside of the CTSI. In addition, the candidate will also assist with scheduling, administrative tasks and special projects.

The proportion of effort devoted to each component can change at any time depending on business needs.

Required Skills:

  • Organization: Superb organizational abilities and attention to detail.

  • Technological proficiency: Candidate must be highly proficient in Microsoft Office suite including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Canva, InDesign, Photoshop, etc. They must also be able to use a digital camera to create and edit video and photo content.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication is needed to ensure collaboration and execution of initiatives.

  • Dissemination: Ability to raise the profile of CTSI and use digital and social media-based storytelling to further our reach.

  • Event Planning/Marketing/Branding/PR: Skills associated with event/product promotion, marketing, branding, public relations and advertising required.

  • Creativity: High level of creativity and innovativeness.

  • Collaboration: Strong history of collaboration and ability to work successfully with different types of people across various groups and organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

Communications Support:

  • Creates and regularly analyzes metrics associated with internal and external newsletters.

  • Develops, writes and disseminates email campaigns for internal and external events and monthly newsletters.

  • Creates, designs, updates and maintains CTSI-branded graphic designs and materials.

  • Manages and updates all email listservs.

  • Regularly maintains, plans and evaluates social media performance across multiple platforms. May delegate tasks to students as needed.

  • Updates SC CTSI website as back-up to webmaster.

  • Assists Director of Communications with various initiatives as needed.

  • Helps with scheduling and administrative tasks as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Promotion:

  • Plans and executes in-person events for internal and external engagement/promotion purposes, events to promote SC CTSI resources and services.

  • Meeting scheduling, set-up and takedown.

  • Writes news articles and promotional content as needed.

  • Regularly shoots video and photo content for testimonial and promotional purposes.

Internal Communications:

  • Owns and regularly maintains the internal communication portals for CTSI employees.

  • Crafts and sends out regular communications and updates to CTSI employees.

  • Runs monthly communication updates meetings on behalf of the Institute; assists Central Administration with carrying out initiatives derived from meetings.

  • Assists Central Admin team with putting on engagement events regularly (set up, takedown, etc).

The hourly rate range for this position is $25.26-$27.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidates work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
