Position Description

The Communications Assistant facilitates communication with diverse Museum constituencies, supports the Ackland Art Museum’s media relations, and provides administrative support to the Director of Communications. The Communications Assistant is supervised by the Director of Communications and is a member of the External Affairs Department.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Lateral thinking skills, or the ability to make creative connections between ideas. The ability to move easily between a global perspective and the smallest details with a high degree of accuracy. Excellent demonstrable computer skills, including Microsoft platforms.
A high degree of accuracy is essential in order to maintain and advance the Museum’s reputation.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in art history, communications, public relations, art history, arts administration, or other related field.
Two to three years’ experience in a media relations or communications position, preferably in a museum or arts setting, or equivalent combination of education and training.

Interest in and familiarity with art from various periods and cultures.
Familiarity with Museums, including the Ackland Art Museum.

Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite.
Familiarity with Digital Asset Management platforms. Experience with one or more email marketing platforms, including creating targeted mailings, A/B testing, and list acquisition and management.
Familiarity with Sprout Social or similar social media scheduling platforms.
Familiarity with the principles of graphic design and its importance to institutional identity.
Photography and/or videography skills.
Working knowledge of HTML/CSS.
