Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one Communications Assistant position for the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) at Oregon State University (OSU).
The student worker assists with communications-related projects associated with activities at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC). The student will create and disseminate photos, videos, blog posts, flyers, and stories about student and research activities on the HMSC campus. Some of the work will take place in the field as the student worker will accompany camps, classes, and research field activities to obtain photos, videos, and other content.
Position Duties
Content creation (40%)
  • Interview students, researchers, staff and the public, then create stories, blog posts or videos for social media or other outreach efforts.
  • Create short videos of public and student events and research activities at HMSC and post videos to social media.
  • Create flyers to promote public and student events at HMSC and ensure that online versions are accessible.

 
Photography support (30%)
  • Collect, edit and caption photos, ensuring OSU’s photo policies and procedures are followed. Upload them to Flickr page as directed. Be intentional about selecting photos that represent the diverse identities of the people whom HMSC supports, collaborates with, or aspires to serve with in its activities and programs.

Social media (25%)
  • Create social media posts utilizing appropriate photos and videos to highlight HMSC programs and activities. Ensure that posts are accessible by including alt text on photos and closed captions on videos.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Skills in areas that could include photography (shooting or editing), social media, videography (filming or editing) and graphic design. 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Completion of college courses in fields related to marine science
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience reaching or engaging with diverse and underrepresented groups through communications platforms (e.g., social media) or products (e.g., photography) or outreach efforts (e.g., surveys or online or in-person presentations)
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • If available, students are encouraged to submit samples of their work involving photography, videography, social media and graphic design.
  • Dorm style housing at the HMSC campus may be available if needed.
