Job Description:

The Communications and Outreach Coordinator for the RI Space Grant Consortium (RISGC), funded by NASA, is responsible for developing and creating engaging content for the consortium website, newsletter and social media outlets.  The content developed would increase viewership and awareness of the program and its offerings across the state of RI.  Working closely with the RI Space Grant Program Manager, the Coordinator will create effective materials to convey the mission, achievements, initiatives, and funding opportunities of the program. This would include current information on both local and national activities of the NASA Space Grant College and Fellowship Project.

The Coordinator will also assume responsibility for implementing comprehensive outreach strategies to engage diverse audiences in science, technology, engineering and math research and curriculum/professional development.  This role plays a vital part in promoting the mission of the NASA RI Space Grant Consortium, fostering collaborations, and disseminating information to inspire and educate the public. The Coordinator will work closely with the RI Space Grant team, industry partners, NASA, academic researchers and the public to enhance outreach efforts and facilitate engagement initiatives. The Coordinator will collaborate with the RISGC Leadership to drive outreach and foster inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) initiatives.

Primary responsibilities include: developing and implementing activities and events in collaboration with RI Space Grant Consortium partners and organizations to engage diverse communities and ultimately promote the goals and objectives of the RI Space Grant Consortium.

This is a fixed-term part time (22.5 hours a week) position, which is 100% grant funded and renewable annually dependent on funding.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years’ experience in a related field or the equivalent combination of experience and education.   Familiarity with scientific disciplines, preferred.
  • Previous work within an academic environment or in a role that supports communications and development; community outreach; events and programs, preferred.  
  • Excellent editing, proofreading and communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of website development and maintenance on platforms such as WordPress.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, Google Suite platforms and Zoom.
  • Knowledge and command of evolving social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X and others as needed.
  • Ability to be pro-active and generate new ideas and strategies.
  • Ability to prioritize complex and at times competing goals.
  • Initiative and judgment to problem solve independently .
  • Ability to work with little supervision and also serve as a strong team member.
  • Ability to maintain privacy of confidential and/or sensitive material.
  • Ability to develop and execute creative programming that engages diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

Additional physical demands and working conditions:

The incumbent may have to work occasional evenings and weekends for events.
