Objective
Serves as Communication Studies Department Head within the Visual and Performing Arts & Kinesiology Division. This department covers the prefixes: SPCH and COMM.
Essential Duties
1. Works with the Dean and Assistant Deans in the areas of coordination, admissions, registration, database maintenance, textbook ordering, curriculum resource team meetings, and graduation activities in response to service area needs, for a defined instructional area. 
2. Assists in the promotion of activities, strategies, and processes that prepare students for success while meeting the requirements of all internal and external accreditation entities. 
3. Coordinates the specific academic areas assigned – in terms of planning, development, implementation, and evaluation. 
4. Monitor web site for changes and updates, and communicate the changes back to the Dean and Assistant Dean. 
5. Work with the Dean/Assistant Dean to prepare schedules that meet student needs. 
6. Collaborate with the Dean, Assistant Dean, CRT, and faculty members to develop or improve new programs and program-improvement initiatives. 
7. Mediate faculty-student conflict and communicate with Dean/ Assistant Dean. 
8. Ensure that new faculty have the proper documentation, orientation, and mentoring to successfully meet student needs. 
9. Support Dean/Assistant Dean in the interview process of faculty in the Communication Studies area and other staff positions for the division. 
10. Serve on College Committees as assigned, to include appeals committees. 
11. Oversee online and Quality Matters approval and re-approval process 
12. Facilitate decision-making between campuses and disciplines. 
13. Collect assessment documents and ensure that these are turned in to the CRTs and Assessment Coordinators on time. 
14. Evaluates part time faculty members of their assigned department, including part time faculty teaching in high school settings. 
15. Implement Student Perceptions of Instruction (SPOIs) and oversee data entry and analysis. 
16. Inspect rooms and equipment for repairs and maintenance. 
17. Coordinate substitute for absent faculty and insure paperwork submitted in a timely manner. 
18. Assign mentors to newly hired faculty. 
19. Works with Division Operations Coordinator to insure proper supplies are available for faculty and staff. 
20. Performs educational review for SACSCOC compliance. 
21. Accepts other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be a current full time faculty member within this department 
Master’s degree with academic credentials in at least one of the assigned supervising areas from a regionally accredited college or university. 
Two years full time teaching in higher education. 
The ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks. 
An understanding and commitment to the mission of the comprehensive community college. 
Experience in mentoring new faculty and developing and enhancing faculty skills through effective evaluation. 
Ability to make timely decisions appropriate to the situation and circumstances. 
Meet deadlines for assigned reports and projects. 
Strong commitment to innovative teaching, active learning, and the use of technology to support the delivery of instruction in all modalities. 
Capacity to mediate student-faculty conflicts in a responsive manner. 
Ability to listen, understand, and respond positively to requests and concerns from students, parents, and members of the academic community. 
Capability to create a team–oriented climate with a specific discipline area(s) and build/maintain relationships with compassion and sensitivity – while demonstrating a cooperative, professional attitude. 
Ability to interact effectively as a discipline/program specific leader of an academic team and work collaboratively with others. Foster a collegial work environment and work effectively with a diverse community. 
Proficiency using Microsoft Office and Windows software, integrated software systems, and related instructional technology. 
Strong communication skills, both written and oral. 
Ability to safeguard sensitive and/or confidential information from intentional or unintentional disclosures. 
Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy of the college. 
Ability to travel to all Blinn campuses, as needed.
Preferred Experience and Training
Diverse teaching experiences in higher education. 
Quality Matters approval certification. 
Supervisory experience in a community college or a higher education institution related to a specific discipline/program. For example: biology, philosophy, history, accounting, music, etc. 
Knowledge of Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) policies governing colleges and of federal and state laws affecting community colleges, including experience with institutional accreditation process and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC). 
Experience in online education including, teaching, course development and assessment.

Special Notes To Applicants
Nine or ten month faculty contract with department head appointment is 2 years. There will be an initial 6 month performance evaluation and annual evaluations at the end of each academic year. Employee will continue in position based on evaluations at 6 months and 1 year. 
This is a 9 or 10 month, benefits eligible position. Blinn College pays 100% of health insurance for full time employees, 50% for dependents, and two times your annual salary in life insurance benefits. Leave time includes 16 hours personal each year and 8 hours sick each month of contract. Paid leave for college designated holiday’s, spring break, thanksgiving and Christmas break (approx. 25 days per year)
Credentials
The College assigns appropriately credentialed faculty members in support of educational quality and the mission of the College, in keeping with Board policy DBA LOCAL-X (Employment Requirements and Restrictions – Credentials and Records: Credentials). College policy is consistent with sound educational practice and SACSCOC guidelines. Primary consideration is given to the highest degree earned in the discipline.
