Position Summary:

The communications assistant will hold a pivotal role in the communications office at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. We are seeking a team member to create and execute a comprehensive social media strategy to drive traffic, including developing engaging content, building Graduate School awareness, and providing comprehensive analytics. This team member will also manage the school’s internal e-newsletter and assist in writing/editing stories for the school’s website.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Produces well-written, creative copy, video, photography, and graphics for the school’s social media channels (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, YouTube) and website. This includes shooting and editing videos and photography, and developing social media campaigns with the communications manager that highlight student and faculty research and student-centric events.
  • Assists with writing/editing stories and features to be integrated with social media posts/campaigns.
  • Manages the collection and production of content for the school’s internal e-newsletter including updating the newsletter format to ensure it follows current graphic standards and trends.
  • Uses various graphic software tools to create various videos/graphics for electronic and print publications (flyers/brochures) for school events.
  • Manages the printing and ordering of business cards for students. May also assist with the printing, assembly, and distribution of additional publications to faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
  • Other duties as assigned


Certification/Skills:

  • Experience shooting and editing videos for social media and websites.

  • Experience using social media management platforms such as Loomly or Sprout.
  • Strong news writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Rush).
  • Experience using design platform Canva.
  • Experience using online marketing tools such as Constant Contact, Salesforce, etc.
  • Proficient in AP Style.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or allied field.

Minimum Experience:

  • No experience necessary
  • Two (2) years of experience working in the communications or allied fields (digital news resources, public relations/marketing firm, etc.) is preferred. Internship experience is acceptable.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
