Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) Libraries invites applications for the position of Communication and Media Studies Librarian. Reporting to the Social Sciences Coordinator, this librarian will be responsible for serving as liaison to students, faculty, and staff within the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, a premier unit consistently ranked among national leaders. Core liaison units for this position will include the School of Journalism, the Department of Communication, and the Department of Media and Information. The successful candidate will cultivate partnerships in teaching, learning, research, and outreach with their liaison areas.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Online, hybrid, and in-classroom instruction
  • Provide reference and research support and guidance
  • Develop and maintain collections in relevant disciplines
  • Identify and facilitate access to data sets and statistics from a range of sources in relevant disciplinary areas
  • Design and maintain guides and tutorials for use across liaison areas

MSU Librarians may have a quarter-time secondary assignment (position dependent) based on the needs of the library and candidate interests. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

Librarians are appointed as regular faculty in the continuing appointment system. Faculty are expected to independently apply judgment; have excellent oral and communication skills; and demonstrate attention to detail; flexibility; collegiality; the capacity for collaboration; and a commitment to diversity and inclusion in performance of their duties. As faculty, they develop a self-directed program of professional development and scholarly activities related to their position; and serve on library and university committees as elected or assigned.

The librarian will work to advance the initiatives in the MSU Strategic Plan and in the MSU Libraries Strategic Plan. In support of these initiatives, the Libraries serve as a center of activity and engagement on campus, with librarians empowered to support both student development and transformative research activities.

Required Degree

Masters -Library and Information Science


Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree in information or library science from a program accredited by the American Library Association. 
  • Experience or familiarity with social sciences, journalism, communication studies, or media information sources         
  • Strong interest in cultivating and deepening liaison partnerships.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective teaching and presenting including written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, students, and staff.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Preparation and commitment to conducting independent scholarship consistent with a library faculty appointment.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and an intention to work in and foster a collaborative, respectful culture.
  • Capacity and commitment to engage independently in continuing professional development.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience and/or interest in library services specific to digital scholarship, data visualization, or other digital tools and technologies.
  • Background and/or interest in media and digital literacy.
  • Experience and/or interest in text and data mining.
  • Experience working in an academic or special library or information related field
  • Knowledge of research methodologies in the social sciences
  • Familiarity / awareness of data and statistical sources in communications, journalism and information and media studies.

Special Instructions
