Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field and two years of related experience.  Position included activities which are subject to Export Control Laws.  An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for the requirements noted.  Grade EH.  Salary commensurate with experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) in Physical Sciences and/or Engineering and 4 or more years in commercializing university technologies or similar experience in a business setting

Position Description

Commercialization Manager - Engineering & Physical Sciences manages the protection and commercialization of engineering technologies and others coming from the research and clinical activities of the University of Louisville. Specifically, the position will be accountable for reviewing innovation disclosures, liaising with external patent lawyers to protect inventions, marketing those innovations to potential partners, developing commercialization strategies, and negotiating and maintaining license and similar agreements on behalf of the University.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prompt and thorough evaluation of innovation disclosures, primarily from engineering and physical sciences, for commercialization, IP protection, and market potential.   Engage and oversee outside counsel for intellectual property protection.  Maintain data and file information regarding status of research disclosures and case files, in accordance with all licensing and compliance requirements
  • Marketing of ULRF Inventions in the areas of engineering and physical sciences. Participate in external opportunities for marketing and exposure of UofL technologies (such as business pitch competitions, conferences, etc.).
  • Initiate and lead in license negotiations; lead in negotiation and execution of other commercialization agreement (inter-institutional agreements, etc.).  Lead and manage in license compliance and partner interactions for a portfolio of engineering and physical science-related license agreements.
  • Engage with faculty, students, and all other researchers.  Respond quickly and professionally to inquiries from faculty, students, and external and internal contacts.  Participate in and lead outreach to the UofL community through presentations, classroom lectures, etc.
  • Work with engineering co-op and intern students to educate and engage them in the innovation process. 
  • Serve as an effective ambassador and represent the University and Office of Research and Innovation in National, Regional, and local meetings as needed.
  • Interact with fellow EVPRI affiliated staff in office meetings and discussions about standard operating procedures. Assist and/or lead or mentor project development in technology transfer and training of junior members in the Office of Research and Innovation.
