Primary Duties and
Responsibilities:
 

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Scholarly Productivity and Innovation, the Director of Student Scholarly Productivity will serve as a key member of the Scholarly Productivity and Innovation Unit in the Office of Medical Education and Faculty Success at the Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine (FCoM) at Belmont University. The Director will be responsible for planning and implementing activities to promote exceptional research education, training, and career development activities that will achieve distinction in program quality and outcomes. The Director will serve as a key resource for students in pursuing research electives and year-long research-related opportunities.  The Director will collaborate on student research with FCoM faculty departments, other health professions colleges, and the Office of Grants and Sponsored Research (OGSR) at Belmont University. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Work in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Scholarly Productivity and Innovation and faculty to design the FCoM student scholarly productivity program. 
  • Identify and recruit appropriate faculty research mentors for students, including faculty skilled in basic science, clinical, and medical education research. 
  • Facilitate student’s involvement with available research programs both for short-term or summer research experiences and over the course of their medical education. 
  • Collaborate with FCoM faculty on the core research curriculum, Discovery of Medicine.  
  • With the Assistant Dean for Scholarly Productivity and Innovation, design and facilitate access to FCoM student research-related facilities, resources databases, and services.  
  • Meet 1:1 with students throughout their scholarly project to evaluate progress, mentor, and advise regarding clinical, medical education, and basic research. 
  • Create faculty development activities to increase the number and preparation of faculty mentors. 
  • Create clear expectations for faculty mentors and students for hypothesis development, proposal writing, responsible conduct, data management, manuscript writing, presentation skills, methodology, and database utilization. 
  • Facilitate and report student publications and reports. 
  • Report annually on results of student satisfaction surveys on the program's curriculum and workshops and faculty satisfaction surveys of faculty development workshops and research opportunities.

  • Knowledge and experience in medical education research administration, particularly in developing a new or expanding an existing medical education research enterprise 
  • Must be able to mentor and advise students, as well as solicit students' needs via surveys and develop or identify programs and materials that meet their needs 
  • Ability to manage complex tasks/projects promptly with a high degree of quality and to mobilize relationships and resources in a collaborative, collegial manner 
  • Attention to detail and follow through, along with consistently meeting deadlines 
  • Proficiency with MS Office products (Work, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and Access). 
  • Ability to manipulate data within and across MS Office products (e.g., conduct Microsoft Word email merges using mail lists in Excel; import data from Excel into Access). 
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities independently or with minimal supervision 
   
Required Education Master’s Degree Required; Doctoral Degree preferred (i.e., MD, DO, PhD, EdD, PharmD, DrPH)
  
Required Experience Minimum of two (2) years of related experience of managing student research student research projects; The ability to help elevate the research enterprise at the FCoM with a keen focus on student research training; Innovative and creative ideas for success in a changing landscape of research funding. Interest in mentoring students and creating new research opportunities through networking. Experience evaluating research proposals. Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills. An ability to develop and implement strategies to address long-term opportunities. The capacity to be a forceful advocate for the FCoM, its faculty, students and academic programs. Effectively worked in teams, including demonstrating excellent time management, project management, and communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate race as a social construct while developing materials and case presentations. Demonstrated ability to work independently, attend multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines. Successful experience supervising and developing other professional and support staff by demonstrating the ability to team build and empower direct and indirect reports.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to speak and hear sufficiently to communicate effectively by phone or in person at normal volumes. The employee’s vision must be adequate to read correspondence, computer screen, forms, etc. The position requires good manual dexterity. This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing as necessary.
