Primary Duties and
Responsibilities:
 

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Medical Education and Faculty Success, the Assistant Dean for Scholarly Productivity and Innovation serves as a senior educational researcher in the Office of Medical Education and Faculty Success at the Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine at Belmont University. The Assistant Dean will lead the development and implementation of a research program in collaboration with faculty, staff, and students at the FCoM. The Assistant Dean is responsible for establishing the research enterprise and defining priorities for scholarly activities. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Develop a program of scholarly research 
  • Disseminate research through national presentations and publications. 
  • Procure external grants and contracts to support research activities. 
  • Teach and mentor students and faculty in educational research and scholarship, including study design; analysis of quantitative and qualitative data; and dissemination of results. 
  • Collaborate on research projects and guide research methodology and statistical analyses (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods) with other FCoM faculty and students pursuing studies. 
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the research proposal review committee. 
  • Fostering collaborative, interdisciplinary scholarship between departments and between the FCoM and other colleges at BU.  
  • Work with the FCoM Executive Leadership Team, Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Initiatives on all aspects of research administration, including compliance and financial issues (this includes, but is not limited to, interacting with ORA and the IRB on behalf of the school).  
  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Administration and Strategic Initiatives and the OGSR to create research financial projections for management and planning purposes. 
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean to implement the research aspects of the FCoM strategic plan. 
    Work with other campus research leaders on strategic research partnerships. Represent the FCoM on research matters with the University and the American Association of Medical Colleges.

  • Knowledge and experience in research administration, particularly in developing a new or expanding an existing research enterprise 
  • Must be able to mentor and advise faculty members, as well as solicit faculty needs via surveys and develop or identify programs and materials that meet their needs 
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty leadership, faculty from a variety of disciplines, and committees, including preparation of reports and presentations to diverse stakeholders 
  • Ability to manage complex tasks/projects promptly with a high degree of quality and to mobilize relationships and resources in a collaborative, collegial manner 
  • Attention to detail and follow through, along with consistently meeting deadlines 
  • Proficiency with MS Office products (Work, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and Access). 
  • Ability to manipulate data within and across MS Office products (e.g., conduct Microsoft Word email merges using mail lists in Excel; import data from Excel into Access). 
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities independently or with minimal supervision 
   
Required Education Doctoral Degree required (i.e., MD, DO, PhD, EdD, PharmD, DrPH)
  
Required Experience • Minimum of six (6) years of related experience of managing research programs such as centers, departments, grants; • Experience in supporting innovative and creative ideas for success in a changing landscape of research funding. • Experience in mentoring faculty and creating new research opportunities through networking. • Familiarity with federal grant finance and compliance issues. • Experience evaluating research proposals. • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills. • An ability to develop and implement strategies to address long-term opportunities. • The capacity to be a forceful advocate for the FCoM, its faculty, students and academic programs. • Experience developing and executing strategies for enhancing the medical education careers of faculty members at all levels, including basic science and clinician educators with a demonstrated track record of successful mentoring, leadership, and service by applying data-driven approaches to influence critical issues such as retention and academic promotion, particularly fostering gender and racial equity • Effectively worked in teams, including demonstrating excellent time management, project management, and communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate race as a social construct while developing materials and case presentations. • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines. • Successful experience supervising and developing other professional and support staff by demonstrating the ability to team build and empower direct and indirect reports.

The employee’s vision must be adequate to read correspondence, computer screen, forms, etc. The position requires good manual dexterity. This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing as necessary.
