Job Summary
The College of Engineering is seeking an Innovation Labs Director. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The College of Engineering (CoE) established the Innovations Laboratory (iLabs) in 2021. iLabs is a unique organization that integrates people, infrastructure, and space-assets to (1) provide opportunities for practical, applied, hands-on learning experiences in engineering for users in unstructured and structure environment; and (2) provide necessary and value-added resources that support user project and prototyping needs and services to support the educational and research objectives of the College of Engineering. iLabs footprint includes a machine and prototyping labs, makerspaces, and student club spaces.
The CoE iLabs Director is broadly responsible for the operation and integration of resources and support along with the coordination and planning of staff, equipment, and consumables to ensure the short and long-term effective operations of iLabs. The CoE iLabs Director works as a part of the CoE operations team that reports to the Senior Associate Dean, coordinating closely with the CoE Director of Safety, Facilities Manager, and CoE Director of IT.
This important position is key to ensuring our students have access to unique and meaningful experiential learning opportunities as they progress toward graduation.

Key Responsibilities
25% – Laboratory Operations
  • Responsible for the general operation of COE Innovation prototyping laboratories.
  • Maintaining instructional prototyping and testing lab facilities and equipment.
  • Creating new and improving existing prototyping and testing capabilities.
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining operational policies and procedures for these labs.
  • Authorizing and allocating use of space within these labs for student projects.

25% – Project Support
  • Responsible for providing manufacturing and engineering consultations and mentorship to users (students, staff, faculty) of Innovation Lab resources.
  • Responsible for providing prototype development, manufacturing and fabrication services for instructional and research projects.

20% – Supervision
  • Responsible for supervising all innovation laboratories support personnel which includes professional faculty, staff, graduate assistants and under graduate assistants as needed.
  • Responsible for machine, laboratory and safety training of staff, graduate students and student workers that support the innovation laboratories.

10% – Instruction
  • Develop, support and teach seminars and up to one course per academic year intended to instruct student and lab users in safe and proper operation of equipment from beginner through advanced levels.
  • Responsible for working with faculty to develop curriculum and training in support of COE curricula.

5% – Facilities Management
  • Work closely with the COE Facilities Operations and Safety Officer for oversight and management of the College’s multiple innovation laboratories.

5% – Budget Oversight
  • Responsible for management and tracking of the College budgets related to the above duties.

10% – Other duties as Assigned by the Senior Associate Dean
What You Will Need
  • Graduate Degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Demonstrated mechanical ability to operate and maintain a variety of specialized technical equipment.
  • Experience in facilities and/or lab management.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Two years of facilities and/or lab management
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Typical work day (8am-5pm) anticipated for this position. However, iLabs operates from 7am-9pm M-F and the position incumbent will be expected to work shifts across operating hours. The employee in this position will be required to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and push or pull carts weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequently works off ladders, overhead work, and work on knees.
May require select night and weekend work shifts to support CoE student events and access coordination.
