Job Description

ASU Library is seeking to fill the position of second shift Collections Services Specialist at the High Density Collection on the Polytechnic campus. The person in this role will work under the supervision of the Collections Services Supervisor processing books into the high density storage facility, shelving and retrieving books, and scanning items for patron requests. The work involves sitting at a computer, standing, moving books and trays of books, pushing carts of books and other material, and shelving and retrieving shelved items. This position is based in a closed stacks library environment that is not open to the public.

Essential Duties

  • Conducts operational activities and the provision of services as assigned, ensuring adherence to policies and standards while meeting high levels of service expectations.
  • Provides excellent customer service for assigned collections by assuring timely and accurate provision of materials requested through document delivery and fulfillment services; operates a flatbed or book scanner to digitize materials following library and university policies and procedures.
  • Safely and efficiently handles routine tasks including receiving, shelving, retrieving, storing, and processing materials, complying with all relevant technical and procedural standards; unloads bins, operates an industrial vacuum, and sorts items into trays; operates an industrial lift to move and transport materials up to 30 feet off the ground, including sliding and pulling trays weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Participates in processing materials for assigned collections, including barcode and location assignment and item record updates to ensure accuracy of online catalog information; utilizes knowledge of bibliographic and serials maintenance standards to complete tasks; notifies appropriate personnel of errors or omissions and cooperates in identifying solutions. 
  • Cooperates with library staff to review space needs due to acquisition of new materials, forecasts growth, plans and oversees relocation of materials; communicates and updates affected staff and areas of project status. 
  • Creates a supportive and welcoming environment for student assistants; may provide training to student assistants on locating, handling, digitizing or processing materials as assigned. 
  • May operate a university delivery van or other university vehicle to deliver library materials, equipment, and supplies between approved operational facilities, in accordance with delivery schedules and standards. 
  • May move book material through the process of receiving/returning items to other institutions as well as preparing shipments for off-campus and on-campus delivery. 

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree AND 2 years prior library experience OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. 


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Bachelor’s degree or additional college coursework
  • Familiarity with the role of academic libraries meeting the information needs of students, faculty and staff, including library or document delivery experience
  • Knowledge of Windows desktop, word processing, email, and other office software
  • Ability to adjust to periods of increased work flow and varying responsibilities
  • Ability to work as part of a team in changing environment
  • Evidence of an Arizona Driver’s license

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing and walking Frequent physical demands include stooping, bending, reaching, lifting up to 25 pounds and pushing objects of varying weights up to 100 pounds
  • Exposure to dust and other airborne materials
  • Regularly required to access books and other physical items from shelves up to 7 feet in height requiring climbing library ladders
  • May be required to travel between library locations to deliver and/or retrieve materials using an electric powered cart.
  • May oversee assignments to student workers to ensure timely completion and/or to provide guidance or assistance to questions
  • May be assigned to work in a temperature controlled environment maintained at 50° F.
  • May be assigned to access and return books and other items from shelves up to 30 feet in height, requiring the use of a mechanical lift.
  • Regular computer use involving an online catalog to update records.
  • Extended periods of standing or sitting are required but can be mitigated.
