Job Description
The student will work in the Collaborative Autonomy branch of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Division of the ATAS Laboratory. This position will support the development of safety-critical autonomous system architectures that meet airworthiness and security requirements in various DoD efforts.
We are looking for strong candidates that have extensive C/C++ and Python programming skills, follow software engineering best practices and have a strong mathematical foundation and problem-solving skills. The candidate would have knowledge in one of the following:
- ROS
- Configuration management tools
- Task/team leadership experience
- Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
- Familiarity with Linux and open-source tools
- Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
Job duties may include one or more of the following:
- Support system integration and software development projects for the Department of Defense autonomous system improvement programs.
- Use system specifications and interface descriptions for integration into testing system of systems for Software-in-the-Loop (SITL), Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL), and vehicle flight test operations.
- Grow expertise in software architectural frameworks, methods, and tools.
- Ensure that technical work is performed to appropriate professional standards and that technical requirements are met.
- Manage and document system configurations, including project-specific DevOps practices.
- Add or improve a newly developed library and source code into the broader software stack.
- Add and leverage a third-party library within the autonomy software stack.
- Create improvements to core software components of autonomy architectures used, including illustrating, documenting, and debugging software issues.
- Coordinate system development tasks to include design, integration, and formal testing.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Student Researcher
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics
- 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in integrating and deploying robotics algorithms for real-time operation on a robot in a real-world environment is a plus. Proven research or software project experience in at least one of these areas is desirable:
- Multi-robot collaboration
- Path planning and navigation
- Behavior-based robotics
- Optimal control and estimation
- Machine learning for robotic control
- Software engineering processes

10–20 hours per week
U.S. Citizenship Requirements
Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
