Job Description Summary:
The University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC) is a National Institute of Aging P30-designated national leader in AD research with the vision to impact the lives of every patient and family dealing with Alzheimer’s in the region and across the state of Kansas through our research, education, and clinical care. We are a comprehensive center at the forefront of clinical trials, lifestyle intervention trials, drug and translational research, and basic science research. Our research enables us to also provide leading edge clinical care and support for dementia caregivers. In addition, we provide a wide variety of both public education and training opportunities for the workforce of tomorrow.
The Cognitive Care Network Education Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and facilitating educational and community events that advance the efforts of the Cognitive Care Network. The CCN focuses on the prevention, delay or reduction of preventable crisis and trauma through the integration of an adapted health empowerment model. The CCN provides support to primary care providers and community agencies as well as advancing dementia capability through education and outreach efforts. This position will work with both existing and developing alliances in expanding dementia related education and services across the state.
Job Description:

Required Qualifications:  

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field
  • Experience: Experience interacting with individuals and families facing dementia.
  • Skills:
    • Strong verbal and written skills
    • Detail oriented
    • Ability to meet timelines within a team environment
    • Competency in office applications including excel.
    • Competency in scheduling virtual meetings and events
    • Ability to adapt, learn and be flexible
    • Infrequent in-state travel and evening/weekend responsibilities based on education events.    

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Master’s in Social Work or related field
  • Experience:
    • Experience in community outreach
    • Experience working with ethnically, racially, or geographically diverse or underserved populations.
  • Skills: Demonstrated ability to meet target goals/outcomes.

Job Duties:

- Coordinate, promote and manage logistics of the following education programs.  This would include, among others, coordination with CME/CEU provider, technology management and providing content to outreach team for possible social media use:

  • MentorD – A nine-month education program geared to social workers with fundamental knowledge about dementia, but desiring deeper understanding of the various dementias, specific life implications over time and the practice of social work with these individuals and families.  CEU’s are provided.
  • Dementia Intensive – A day long program for social work students from eight schools of social work in the region about the application of key social work skills with individuals and families experiencing dementia.
  • Managing Dementia – A day long training for providers, practice nurses and others addressing early recognition, dementia evaluations, disclosure and management of these diseases.   (CME is provided)
  • PAIRS – A program partnering first year medical students with individuals with MCI/an early stage dementia to spend 4 hours a month together through the academic year to provide education to the medical student about the subtleties of early cognitive changes and the implications in real life settings.   Students also attend monthly lectures and are provided ‘homework’ as they spend time with their PAIR.   
  • Experience League – A panel of individuals with MCI/early dementia who are available to speak to University and high school classes about their experience in recognizing, navigating and coming to terms with their diagnosis.   Work includes coordinating with the various professors, teachers, the Experience League panelists and Experience League facilitator.
  • Training Room – A day long education event primarily for certified nurses aides, other professionals and families.  The event includes 18 education stations that registrants choose to attend.   Certificates of attendance are provided. 
  • Community Partner Training – Training programs provided to grant related partnering organizations. 
  • Pocket Talks – Provider directed monthly virtual lectures.
  • SPARK – There are two types of SPARK events, two directed at Providers and other health professionals and one directed at community.   
  • Mindful Minutes – Weekly virtual education with one directed at individuals with MCI/early dementia and one directed at care partners.  
  • Community Conversations – An anticipated new program to bring “walk in” education to small communities in Kansas. 

– Serve as CCN representative to the Dementia Friendly Kansas City Collaboration.

– Coordinate CCN surveys.

– Maintain current resource lists.

– Oversee ADC support groups, insuring up to date handout and information on website, facilitating      designated support groups, filling in for other support group facilitators when they are not available, sending reminder messages to attendees and assessing service usage/gaps.   This can also include assisting with logistical arrangements and promotion.    

– Assist the Director of CCN in coordinating onboarding tasks of new staff and MSW interns.  

– Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
