CO Nutrition Technician

We are seeking a CO Nutrition Technician who will be an integral part of the nutrition care team of the ICTR's Research Nutrition Program. This position involves computer nutrient analyses of diets, menu planning, anthropometric measurements, instructing and directing patients on research protocols, dosing, moderate cooking, packing out research meals and formula preparation as well as managing nutrition data of certain protocols the pediatric, adult and outpatient research patients. This position will also include some health coaching for research protocols.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directly reports to the Research Nutrition Director and reports indirectly to Meal Coordinator/Supervisor and Research Nutritionists.
  • Conforms to work policies and procedures of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Performs nutritional screening and basic nutritional assessments to include various anthropometric measurements, calculations of body composition, BMI, MAC, TSF, and z-scores. Performs moderate meal preparation and calculation of research diets and weighing out allergy doses.
  • Develops and reviews menus and recipes for research studies; assuring that they are reproducible, accurate and palatable and within the guidelines of the research protocol needs, such as low protein diets or Modified Atkins diets.
  • Conducts telephone and in-person food questionnaire interviews with research patients using different nutrition research tools.
  • Reviews other food questionnaires for completeness and accuracy.
  • Collects and enters nutrition data into the computer database.
  • Conducts health coaching visits with research participants.
  • Maintains open communication with interdisciplinary team, such as the ICTR CRU’s Nutrition personnel, nursing, physicians, Hospital Nutrition department personnel.
  • Performs literature searches of references for various research studies.
  • Interacts with other medical professionals, such as physicians, principal investigators, clinical and research nurses, and research coordinators. Assists Research Nutritionists and Nutrition Research Manager in the research nutrition rotation program for dietetic internship programs from Johns Hopkins Bayview MC and University of Maryland Medical Systems.
  • Prepares reports, collects and analyzes data, and maintains records.
  • Manages and organizes research protocols and dietetic internship rotation binders.
  • Assists Nutrition Coordinator/Supervisor and Nutritionists in designing study recipes for more complex diet therapies.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as required by the Nutrition Research Manager. May be required to be on-call on weekends.
  • Transportation is a requirement. May need to work at other locations, such as JH ProHealth in Woodlawn and JH Bayview MC.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Technical qualifications or specialized certifications: May require Health Coach certification within 3 months of the start of the position.
  • Any specific physical requirements for the job: Will need to be able to lift up to 20 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or certification as a Dietetic Technician. 
  • One-year related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Physiology, Culinary Arts or related discipline highly preferred.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
