The Comparative Medicine Program (CMP) enhances excellence in research and teaching at Texas A&M through high quality animal care. We provide a variety of services to researchers at the university through standard and specialized facilities. These services include the procurement of animals and animal husbandry supplies, provision of veterinary care, use of CMP surgical facilities, a polyclonal antibody production service, technical support services, and animal use training services. The CMP is seeking a CMP Research Animal Technician I who will report directly to the CMP Division Coordinator in the Comparative Medicine Program and is responsible for: performing husbandry duties for research animals, including the sanitation of assigned animal holding rooms and the maintenance of assigned support areas. What You Need To Know

Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Position Details: Ability to move heavy objects. Availability to work outside normal business hours; such as a Tuesday thru Saturday shift or a Sunday thru Thursday shift. Work weekends and holidays as required.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Six months of related experience in clerical or laboratory animal care

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record

  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class "C" vehicle operator's license within 30 days of employment

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of animal care and safety processes

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Successful completion of any CMP Laboratory Animal Science Course within first year in position.

Responsibilities:

  • CAGE WASH- Cleans and maintains laboratory animal care areas and cage wash area and documents sanitation and maintenance of assigned areas. Operates cage washers and autoclaves, including reporting malfunctioning equipment and documenting daily equipment performance.

  • SANITATION & MAINTENANCE- Operates, cleans, maintains and makes minor repairs to laboratory animal cages and related laboratory animal equipment, including reporting malfunctioning equipment and documenting daily equipment performance.

  • ANIMAL HANDLING- Transports animals, caging equipment, bulk feed, and bedding materials. This will require operation of a personal or University motor vehicle.

  • CONTINUED EDUCATION- Participates in training and continuing education activities as required by federal guidelines and accreditation standards.  Attends staff meetings as required.

  • TRAINING- Follows established protocols and procedures and ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and guidelines concerning quality assurance and laboratory animal care and use.

  • RECORD KEEPING & OBSERVATION- Observes all laboratory animals in assigned work area and reports any sick, injured or distressed animals. Records accurate daily observation of animals and environmental parameters.

  • HUSBANDRY- Performs husbandry duties for assigned conventional and specific pathogen free (SPF) research animal colonies.
