Position Information


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology is a basic science department in the School of Medicine and engages in a broad range of teaching and research activities. Faculty in the Department conduct research on a variety of problems ranging from the study of nervous system function to the control of blood pressure. It is also strong in renal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurophysiology. Faculty in this department also interacts with clinical departments within the School of Medicine. The department’s breadth of research interests allows us to offer students a unique exposure to physiology at the molecular, cellular and organ levels. Active interaction occurs with other basic science departments at the University as well as collaboration with scientists at nearby Duke University and Research Triangle Park.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of this cloud software engineer position is to develop and improve upon user-friendly software that interfaces with a server-side machine learning algorithm (MLA). The MLA quantifies pain from facial expressions, body posture, and motion. Will be expected to work with a team of neuroscientists, data scientists, and programmers to implement updates to existing software, develop new software, API server development, and quality assurance, web-based client development, and provide user support for the software. Will also assist in working with a third party software company to develop and improve a mobile app that also interfaces with the server-side machine learning algorithm.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s or Bachelors and 0-2 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Engineering, or a related discipline or a Bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Experience with cloud-based middleware development, database management (such as MongoDB), and deep learning library (such as Pytorch and Tensorflow) is preferable. The candidate should be strong programming skills in Python, Java, and/or C++.
