Position Summary
Responsible for the optimal design and implementation of a multi- and hybrid-cloud strategy and architecture utilizing public cloud services with a focus on configuring cloud workloads and leading research-computing strategies.
This position will work closely with senior leaders and interdisciplinary research teams to support data acquisition, management, and analysis requirements and support complex interdisciplinary projects within and across the university.
This position is also responsible for participating in the design, implementation, and engineering support for other complex solutions such as the optimal integration of existing on-premises Washington University assets such as the Private Cloud platform, file services platform, backup platform, and disaster recovery architecture with the utilization of public cloud infrastructure. This position provides guidance and leadership to other informatics, data science, IT management, and staff.
This position will manage and execute cloud solutions across lifecycle strategy, design, implementation, and operations, focusing on research computing and will provide strategy and thought leadership for cloud endeavors based on cloud architecting best practices.


Job Description

Will need to be able to travel to on-campus and off-campus locations for meetings as needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, analyze, and design IT infrastructure solutions and services that effectively support the enterprise technology strategy. Ensure technology solutions and services are architected appropriately for the availability, accessibility, and scalability requirements of the organization. Define and document service level expectations for new services in accordance with institutional objectives.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of new technologies and services aligned to institutional priorities. Delivered solutions should operate efficiently and reliably by utilizing appropriate automation techniques. Define metrics to measure and demonstrate value of new implementations.
  • Work closely with key functional partners across the academic, research, clinical, administrative and IT teams to articulate the value and impact of public cloud solutions and services. Lead design sessions, workshops and requirements gathering meetings to build consensus for cloud solutions and new IT infrastructure strategies throughout the IT campus community. Recognize and capture business use cases and test scenarios.
  • Assists in providing escalated support for highly complex technical problems associated with cloud security and enterprise infrastructure. Assists in investigating and resolving issues to ensure consistent delivery of infrastructure services.
  • Works closely with the Chief Data Scientist, Chief Research Information Officer, and other leaders in developing public cloud and infrastructure architectural governance programs to align the portfolio with the strategies, prioritizations, and financing that optimizes organizational value. Participate in governance programs and coordinate with other architects and technical experts across the campus community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in information management, computer science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a higher education research University.
  • Experience with IT Infrastructure transformation and data center migrations.
  • Conversant with gathering information from customers and designing, building, deploying, and supporting a system that meets their needs.
  • Enterprise level of understanding of how different systems and services such as networking, security, infrastructure, and software integrate with and affect the IT environment.
  • Possess a broad range of technical skills and experience with enterprise-class services.
  • Experience with security design and configuration management within various cloud technologies such as VMware, Microsoft, Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in information management, computer science, engineering, or a related field and six years of experience as an information technology professional in one or many roles such as architect, systems engineer, network engineer, or systems analyst AND/OR equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • A well-rounded infrastructure background with exposure to multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments with good experience in virtualization, operating systems, storage, and networking.
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading technical design projects during all phases of development and deployment.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience successfully designing, delivering and/or supporting IT business solutions for large-scale organizations across multiple hardware and software platforms.
  • Knowledge of enterprise and line-of business applications, and their relationship to the enterprise infrastructure landscape.

Salary Range
$89,300.00 - $157,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
