Cyber Security, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Lab (CIPHER). CIPHER conducts applied research focused on cyber threats and countermeasures, secure multi-level information sharing, resilient command and control network architectures, reverse engineering, vulnerability identification, and high performance computing and analytics. CIPHER engineers develop and apply cutting edge technologies in computing, network architectures, signal and protocol analysis, network forensics, malware analysis, and reverse engineering (hardware and software) to solve the tough problems. GTRI-CIPHER is seeking a Cloud Engineer to support efforts revolving around infrastructure and application virtualization in a security sensitive environment. The CIPHER IT team supports over 350 researchers, engineers, and support staff tackling complex and novel IT challenges for commercial and government customers. The CIPHER IT team is distributed across multiple campus buildings and supports a sizable base of remote users across the United States. The candidate will work closely with the CIPHER IT Infrastructure and Operations Teams to facilitate and improve cloud based IT Solutions for CIPHER. This is a technical role with unique challenges, a successful candidate should enjoy working on and solving complex problems.

Outside of internal operations, the Cloud Engineer is expected to actively participate in sponsored research programs across the laboratory above and beyond providing internal IT support. Many of GTRI-CIPHER’s programs require sophisticated information technology platforms and, as such, the Cloud Engineer will be required to hold a Department of Defense Top Secret clearance.


Job Duties
  • Function as a Cloud subject matter expert for CIPHER IT, and assist our researchers with Cloud projects and implementations.
  • Defining information security controls and patterns that support risk assessments and support the development of secure architectures.
  • Develop and implement core service infrastructure for network management and security for Cloud Services.
  • Assess, recommend, develop, and implement Cloud Solutions.
  • Collaborate with Project Directors, and Engineers across our organization to deliver comprehensive solutions to meet their requirements.
  • Develop automated deployment, management, and monitoring solutions for our cloud infrastructure.
  • Manage orchestration, configuration, and provisioning automation within our cloud infrastructure.
  • Evaluate new tools and Cloud technologies to improve GTRI/CIPHER capabilities.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Information Technology Management, Cyber Security, Computer Science, Computer Engineering.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Master’s degree in Information Technology, Information Technology Management, Cyber Security, Computer Science, Computer Engineering and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Information Technology, Information Technology Management, Cyber Security, Computer Science, Computer Engineering and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Information Technology, Information Technology Management, Cyber Security, Computer Science, Computer Engineering.

Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's degree with a graduation date of May,2021 and skills relevant to this position will be considered


Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Server OS - Experience with at least one of: MS Server, Linux(RHEL/CentOS/Debian)
  • Recent experience standing up/building AWS, Azure, or Kubernetes infrastructure
  • Experience leveraging Ansible to automate builds
  • Experience implementing and managing CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with IaaS, PaaS, and Cloud Services such as AWS, Azure
  • Detailed understanding of secure network and application design

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate security tools with IT infrastructure
  • Ability to lead security architecture and engineering activities in a matrixed organization
  • Experience identifying and recommending mitigation steps for threats and risks associated with security vulnerabilities in a POA&M
  • Experience in developing in multiple distributed environments
  • Outstanding writing skills with an ability to convey complex, technical information in an engaging and easily understood manner
  • Decisive decision maker

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.


Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
