Position Highlights

This position is responsible for the technical implementation of solutions to improve the visibility, security, operational stability, and regulatory compliance of the University's cloud environment. Uses an extensive knowledge of AWS services and infrastructure as code to propose and deploy enterprise cloud services.

  • Campus Cloud Infrastructure – assists campus departments in migration of server environments into AWS
  • Managed Cloud Services – assists in the development and deployment of cloud-based managed services

The Managed Cloud Services team is collection of motivated and ambitious AWS engineers from diverse technical backgrounds who rely on their creativity and AWS expertise to resolve a wide array of institutional challenges by developing cloud solutions to campus computing needs.

Candidates working anywhere in the U.S. may be considered for a remote assignment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Designs and continuously develops self-service portals for Cloud service automation, inventory, and server management. Develops tools to gather data from Cloud services and log repositories and present them as reports to provide visibility to management.
  • Deploys, documents, proceduralizes, and maintains managed AWS service offerings to be consumed by campus departments.
  • Designs and deploys infrastructure as code to improve the security, operational stability and maturity of the UArizona AWS Organization.
  • Consults with other architecture & engineering teams in the adoption of cloud technology and best practices.
  • Uses knowledge of regulatory standards to participate in the assessment of and deployment of solutions to ensure adherence to regulatory compliance and security best practice.
  • Participates in a 24/7/365 on-call rotation in support of relevant technologies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong, working knowledge of the following technologies/services:
    • AWS services: EC2, VPC, CloudFormation, IAM, Security Groups, AWS Backup, AWS Systems Manager, ELB/ALB, etc
    • Networking: VLANs, TCP/IP, firewall, switches, routing, etc.
    • Services: DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc.
    • Scripting languages: Powershell, Python, YAML, etc.
    • Logging/monitoring tools: Amazon CloudWatch, Splunk, etc.
  • Self-motivated, results-oriented with a demonstrated ability to design, collaborate and deliver robust enterprise IT services from need to production.
  • A strong track record of understanding and interest in current and emerging technologies demonstrated through training, job experience, and/or industry activities.
  • Ability to work as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to quickly learn new skills and technologies.
  • Ability to multi-task between multiple complex projects and operational requests.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required AND Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant experience with AWS infrastructure, design, and architecture.
  • Experience with Amazon compute technologies (EC2, RDS, Lambda).
  • Experience with cloud automation technologies (AWS CloudFormation, Ansible, AWS Code Build, Jenkins).
  • Experience with configuration management (Chef, Puppet), containerization (AWS ECS, Docker), and source code management tools (Subversion, RCS, Git).
  • Experience with AWS roles and permissions (AWS IAM).
  • Experience with virtual server infrastructure (VMware, Hyper-V)
  • Experience with configuring and administering Linux and Windows servers in medium to large scale environments.
  • Experience with one or more higher level programming languages (Ruby, Python, PHP, Perl, Bash, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Experience with web development technologies such as Django, PHP, Nginx, Vue.js, etc.
  • Experience with visibility tools such as CloudWatch, Splunk, Tenable, GuardDuty, AWS Config, etc.
  • Experience building reports from logging/monitoring applications.
