About the Department | The NC State Veterinary Hospital is an integrated health care center for companion, equine, and farm animals. We exist to further the teaching mission of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and to provide state-of-the-art patient care. More than 30,000 patients are diagnosed and treated annually by the Veterinary Hospital. Established in 1983, the Veterinary Hospital is one of the highest rated regional academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board-certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the Veterinary Hospital is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. For more information about the NC State Veterinary Hospital go to https://cvm.ncsu.edu/nc-state-vet-hospital/. The radiation oncology service is located in the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The center is equipped with a strontium probe, and Varian Novalis TX (with cone beam CT, high-definition MLC, CIVCO Protura robotic 6 degrees-of-freedom treatment couch, two Varian Eclipse treatment planning workstations, and a Varian ARIA record and verifysystem), capable of IMRT, IGRT and stereotactic radiation therapy. The linac is currently undergoing an upgrade to include addition of VMAT (RapidArc), a third treatment planning workstation, and a software upgrade (Eclipse v18); this is scheduled to be complete by early 2024. We enjoy a busy and diverse caseload that is well-supported by radiation oncology faculty and residents, a robust support staff (two client services representatives, one veterinary assistant, three veterinary technicians and one radiation therapist), a consulting medical physicist, and two medical dosimetrists who provide remote treatment planning support. Radiation treatment planning is supported by a full diagnostic imaging suite, including CT and MRI. Each year, the service is responsible for primary receiving of over 300 new patient consultations, and treats over 200 new patients. The service has historically operated as a primary receiving service that works closely with colleagues in Medical Oncology (four faculty, four residents and one intern) and Soft Tissue/Oncologic Surgery (four faculty, five residents, and one intern). |
Essential Job Duties | We seek to expand the Radiation Oncology team via the addition of a clinical veterinarian. The position is called “Clinical Veterinary Instructor” and the ideal candidate is a small animal general practitioner, or emergency practitioner, who has completed a rotating internship (or equivalent practice experience). There is no requirement for either oncology-specific or residency training.
