Animal Care Unit


Position Overview

The clinical veterinarian functions as an integral member of the KU-Lawrence Animal Care Unit
leadership team. The incumbent provides preventative, clinical, and surgical care to a variety of
laboratory animal species. The incumbent works closely and interacts with the ACU director, ACU
facility manager, ACU facility supervisor, and IACUC to ensure efficient operation of the KU-Lawrence
Animal Care and Use Program in accordance with the applicable regulations and standards.

Job Description

50% - Direct Veterinary Care

  • Provide evidence-based preventative, clinical, and surgical care to laboratory animals in accordance with current veterinary medical standards.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records detailing diagnostic decisions ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Direct and maintain a health surveillance program to include coordination of requests for importation of non-vendor source animals.
  • Share rotating emergency duty with the ACU director/university attending veterinarian (ACUD/UAV).
  • Serve as acting University Attending Veterinarian in the absence of ACUD/UAV.
25% - Program and Research Support
  • Assist the ACUD/UAV in establishment and implementation of effective quality control systems for facility management and animal husbandry practices.
  • Review and revise Unit operating procedures to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to research personnel on animal model selection, protocol development, anesthetic/analgesic selection, surgical techniques/procedures, pre-post operative care, breeding colony management, and methods of euthanasia.
  • Provide clinical and didactic training/instruction to husbandry and research personnel, including students, on humane care and use of laboratory animals, acceptable veterinary techniques, proper use of veterinary equipment, occupational health and safety, and other topics pertinent to work with laboratory animals.
  • Direct supervision of veterinary technicians.
25% - Regulatory and Compliance Support
  • Assist the IACUC and ACUD/UAV in maintaining compliance with the Federal Animal Welfare Act, the Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, as well as maintenance of AAALAC accreditation.
  • Assist with external program reviews, site visits, and inspections, including but not limited to document preparation and reviewer escort.
  • Support various IACUC activities, including but not limited to veterinary pre-review of protocols and semiannual evaluations.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an institution accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
  • Current veterinary license in at least one state.
  • Must obtain Kansas veterinary license within 12 months of appointment.
  • Work experience that demonstrates effective written and verbal communication and collaboration that fosters and maintains productive working relationships.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience, following receipt of veterinary degree, providing preventative, clinical, and surgical care to animals, particularly rodents and rabbits, in an academic laboratory.
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine board eligibility.
