JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:   The Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for a wide spectrum of duties including professional veterinary and administrative services in laboratory animal medicine, biomedical research support, and education.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Provides direct veterinary care or ensures that such care is available.
  • Develops and implements disease prevention and diagnosis procedures and programs.
  • Consults with and instructs investigators on the diagnosis and treatment of animals; prevention of infections and infestations; selection of animal models; selection and administration of anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquilizers; and planning and conduct of animal surgical procedures.
  • Meets with researchers to provide expert opinion and recommendations in the project development phase.
  • Provides specialized diagnostic service including the examination of animals, animal tissues and body fluids for the isolation and identification of pathogens, abnormalities, injuries, or research related complications.
  • Collaborates with administrators, faculty, animal care staff, and the UTHSC IACUC to evaluate facilities and practices and to recommend practical and effective animal care and use procedures and maintenance systems.
  • Provides veterinary review of IACUC protocols.
  • Provides professional veterinary expertise and professional direction for the animal research facilities located at the UTHSC campus.
  • Assists in the oversight of the animal care and use program to ensure that it meets regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Maintains in-depth familiarity with regulatory guidelines and laws to help in identifying any non-compliant animal care and use elements or procedures at UTHSC.
  • Assists in development of training programs and participates in training of individuals who work with animals to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements for such training.

    Qualifications

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

    Veterinarian Medicine Doctoris (VMD)/ Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)-accredited institution or certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) and specialty training in laboratory animal medicine. Must be currently licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Tennessee or obtain license within 12 months of hire. Must have controlled substance licensure in the State of Tennessee or obtain within 12 months of hire. USDA accreditation desired. Board certification in laboratory animal medicine by ACLAM or board eligibility is highly desirable. Must have a valid Driver’s License. Must pass background check and receive clearance from the Department of Justice to be granted access to the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    ·         Experience in independent or collaborative research and experience organizing and leading large research projects is desired.

    ·         Excellent oral and written communication skills to include presentation skills.

    ·         Ability to operate cargo van and box truck to assist in movement of animals/equipment for special projects. 

    WORK SCHEDULE: This position work may extend beyond regular work hours and will share on-call evening, weekend, and holiday duties with other LACU veterinarians.
