The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute at UNC-CH is one of the medical research institutions working together as a national consortium to improve the way biomedical research is conducted across the country. The consortium, funded through the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA),shares a common vision to reduce the time it takes for laboratory discoveries to become treatments for patients, and to engage communities in clinical research efforts.
The Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CTRC) is a program of the TraCS Institute within the home of the UNC School of Medicine. The CTRC provides both inpatient and outpatient clinical services to support a wide variety of research studies involving human subjects with an array of investigators representing the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, and others.
Position Summary
This position will serve as a Clinical Research Technician within the Clinical and Translational Research Center. The Center is the largest entity on campus supporting clinical trials across the School of Medicine/UNC Health Care. The Clinical Research Technician (CRT) will support study implementation under the guidance of the registered nurse (RN) within the context of a care delivery settings such as the NC TraCS Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC), community locations, and research on location within the Schools of UNC (i.e. Dentistry, Nursing, Medicine, etc.), UNC Medical Center and UNC Health. The CRT supports clinical research studies by maintaining front office operations including managing patient appointments, maintaining documents and other clerical work, ordering and restocking supply inventories, documenting vital signs, specimen collection per protocol and performing other procedures as directed (i.e. measurement of height, weight, EKGs, point of care testing). The CRT ensures the integrity of research data while maintaining care that is safe, efficient, timely, effective, equitable, compassionate, and patient-centered.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA.)
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Nurse Aide certification through the NC Department of Health and Human Services Nurse Aide Registry or Medical Assistant certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
* Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
* Ability to work with a wide variety of people and multiple audiences in a professional, effective, and diplomatic manner and maintain effective communications with patients, health care personnel, co-workers, and others.
* Must be able to work independently, as well as function as part of a team.
* Possess a positive attitude, flexibility, and willingness to help whenever needed.
* Maintain a positive, results oriented work environment, contributing positively to teamwork and morale.
* Ability to successfully balance multiple competing priorities.
* Keen attention to detail and ability to perform self-review of work for accuracy and completeness.

* Possess a working knowledge of standard office equipment including computers, copiers, scanners, and multi-line phones.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* At least two (2) years of related nursing or medical assistant experience.
* At least two (2) years of clerical or customer service experience.
* Prior experience working in human subjects research.
* Prior experience with UNC research systems (CRMS), UNC Health’s electronic medical record (Epic) and supply chain software.
* Prior experience working with pediatric patients in a clinical setting.
* Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
* EKG Technician Certification or equivalent training/experience.
* Phlebotomy certification or equivalent training/experience.
Required Licenses/Certifications
* Nurse Aide certification through the NC Department of Health and Human Services Nurse Aide Registry or Medical Assistant certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
* Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
* Must have reliable transportation within UNC Medical Center and various campus locations.
* Must be able to remain stationary for extended periods of time in front of a computer with or without accommodation.
* Must be able to move 35 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
* Visual attention and mental concentration with or without accommodation are required in this capacity due to the clinical nature of the work.
