Position Summary
Position supports the clinical support service by managing outside material inventory, digital imaging, and ensuring the prompt return of materials to referring clinicians.


Job Description

Normal office with heavy lifting and long periods of standing, walking.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides customer support for clients, faculty, and staff in a friendly and helpful manner while providing a positive, professional, courteous, and empathetic understanding to all customers.
  • Exhibits high quality performance through accuracy, attention to detail, and commitment in a timely manner.
  • Accepts and electronically receives laboratory specimens for all sections of the laboratory, as well as pathology material, including registering patients into medical record and laboratory information systems.
  • Registers patient demographic and insurance information into hospital-wide computer system.
  • Places necessary orders for testing as requested by the pathologists into the lab information system and prepares and sends pathology materials to reference laboratories in support of clinical testing not provided internally.
  • Enters in appropriate CPT codes for billing into lab information system.
  • Effectively troubleshoots errors and problems to ensure pre-analytic accuracy in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of insurance industry. Performs insurance verification for testing to ensure accurate and timely payment for services. Calls insurance companies for precertification when required.
  • Transcribes pathology quick text codes for preparation of gross, microscopic and final diagnosis results.
  • Notifies clinicians of any critical pathology results that require immediate attention or those results that are requested to be communicated.
  • Obtains precertification for any molecular testing requested by pathologists or clinicians, and prepares the pathology material for send out, retrieval of results and return of material.

Other Functions

  • Effectively prioritizes workload to ensure completion of duties within stated expectations
  • Communicates effectively, both written and verbally, with staff members and co-workers on all pertinent information in a professional manner.
  • Assists with additional projects as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of facility layout and purchasing functions.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a healthcare setting.

Salary Range
$16.17 - $23.47 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
