The job duties of this role are those outlined in the position description for a Clinical Specialist, Speech/Audiology (Job Code 5520). This position requires that an area of clinical expertise in Speech Pathology or Audiology be established and serves as a clinical resource in specialty area. They will create and implement evidenced-based and state-of-the-art service programs and clinical services in the area of expertise that are consistent with department standards.

This clinical specialist will be responsible for overseeing the clinical pediatric audiology program (30% effort). They will ensure that clinical protocols are evidenced-based and that staff are trained on new diagnostic and treatment approaches. They will work with the Audiology leadership to monitor clinical productivity and operations, and implement quality improvement opportunities. The remaining 70% effort is devoted to an independent caseload to provide direct patient care for children with hearing loss.

  • Direct patient care of pediatric patients with hearing loss. Duties include maintaining an independent caseload consisting of diagnostic evaluation of auditory function and auditory treatment for children birth to 22 years. Provides evidence-based evaluation and treatment to diverse, medically challenging patient populations and quality service delivery techniques that facilitate optimum services to meet patient needs being sensitive to patient age, social, cultural, educational and vocational background.
  • Participates in peer review that involves the development of new programs in pediatric audiology and completes performance improvement projects pertaining to pediatric audiology. Maintains open communication and collaboration with Administrative Staff to assure that policies, procedures, and other activities are consistently implemented and support department standards during the implementation of new programs.
  • Works collaboratively with audiology leadership regarding the development new programs in pediatric audiology. Along with audiology leadership, collaborates with other divisions, departments, professionals, and other partners to assure the implementation of new programs in pediatric audiology.
  • In consultation with audiology leadership, provides input regarding budgeting, purchasing, and annual objectives pertaining to pediatric audiology. Recommends supplies and equipment, particularly regarding new technology and software that applies to pediatric audiology, which may be needed for the development of new programs.
  • Assists audiology leadership in the identification, development, and implementation of marketing and program development opportunities within pediatric audiology. Provides input for ongoing development and implementation of policies and procedures in pediatric audiology that guide and support the provision of services
  • Provides advanced training and mentoring in pediatric audiology for staff across clinical clusters and local/ regional training and mentoring in pediatric audiology external to DUHS. Presents locally, regionally, and/or nationally on topics and demonstrates and maintains additional training/education in the area of expertise. Remains current in state-of-the-art literature, equipment, and/or practice techniques within pediatric audiology.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Graduate of an accredited program in Speech Language Pathology with a Master’s degree. Graduate of an accredited program in Audiology with a Master’s degree or Clinical Doctorate (AuD) if degree conferred after 2007.

Experience

Previous medical setting experience preferred, although other relevant clinical experience considered. minimum of 5 years experience treating primarily a pediatric audiology caseload required, 10 years preferred.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Current NC licensure to practice Speech Language Pathology or Audiology (license to match license concentration) Current Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech / Language Pathology or Audiology (certificate to match degree concentration) or Board Certified in Audiology (ABOA) or New Graduate Privilege License (Temporary License) in Audiology issued by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists. For Privilege License, full license is expected within one month after completing supervised year of training.
