Job Summary

The Division of Substance Abuse and Addiction Medicine (DSAAM) provides multi-disciplinary consultation and treatment for patients with substance use disorders at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG).  DSAAM provides opioid agonist treatment for opioid use disorder through the Opiate Treatment Outpatient Program (OTOP) at SFGH, a well-established and regarded opioid treatment program. OTOP has provided comprehensive treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) in San Francisco since 1973. OTOP serves adults of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, religions or spiritualties living in San Francisco with OUD who are low-income and uninsured or underinsured. Many of OTOPs clients have co-occurring disorders and significant physical health problems, including HIV. Additionally, they face significant cultural barriers to receiving quality, respectful care. OTOP provides methadone maintenance dosing and evidence-based counseling to opiate dependent clients at multiple locations including ZSFG campus, Bayview Van site, and San Francisco County Jail (SFCJ). Additional wrap around services offered include psychiatry, case management, alcohol use treatment, Hep C treatment, and Contingency Management for stimulant use. 

The incumbent will be assigned to OTOP’s Intake & Counseling Team in partnership with Jail Health Services at San Francisco County Jail (SFCJ). The incumbent will support patients enrolling in an opioid treatment program while in-custody, actively engaging patients in substance use counseling while in-custody, and continuing treatment at an outpatient clinic upon release. The incumbent will provide comprehensive assessment, crisis intervention, case management, individual, group therapy, and substance use services. Services will be provided at SFCJ locations and OTOP’s outpatient clinic (located on the ZSFG campus). Clinician will be assisting clients in meeting their needs and will make referrals as appropriate. The overall goal of OTOP and Jail Health Services’ collaboration is to offer evidence-based treatment options to patients in custody and improve continuity of care between Jail Health Services and community-based providers.

Required Qualifications

  • CSW I : Master’s degree in social work, psychology or related field from an accredited university and current registration with CA Board of Behavioral Sciences as ASW, AMFT, and/or APCC or equivalent training/education 
  • CSW II : all of the above plus possession of the requirements necessary for application for licensure as a clinical social worker as determined by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others. Ability to work in a high stress, high volume area and work well under pressure and with deadlines. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately, and be detailed oriented. Able to efficiently prepare written summaries of activities, set priorities and complete reports within required timeframes. Knowledge of medical and/or psychiatric terminology.

  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability
  • An understanding of mental health and substance use issues and sensitivity toward mental health clients
  • Ability to work with clients and program staff from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds
  • Ability to obtain San Francisco County Jail Clearance through the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Experience working in a substance use treatment program as gained as part of study or while in school, or internship in a similar institution
•    Experience working with severely mentally ill adults, unhoused and dual diagnosed populations as gained  as part of study or while in school, or  internship in a similar institution
•    Experience doing case management as gained  as part of study or while in school, or  internship in a similar institution
•    Experience working with individual actively involved in the criminal justice system as gained  as part of study or while in school, or  internship in a similar institution
•    Prior related UC experience
