Position Summary
This position will organize and assist in the collection of human specimens for the Nebraska Cardiovascular Biobank and Registry. Major responsibilities including consenting of patients or their legal representative, coordinating specimen collection and archiving, and maintaining specimen records. This position requires some laboratory experience in the safe collection and processing of human tissue or blood. Tissue collection will occur primarily in an operating room or autopsy room but may occur in other patient care or research areas. General lab skills are needed to isolate DNA, RNA, cells and help with culture of human cells for future studies. It is expected that specimens will, on occasion, need to be collected and processed at night and on weekends. While previous phlebotomy experience is desirable, the position will also receive formal training to ensure proficient phlebotomy skills. Excellent organizational skills are expected. Responsibilities will include organization and tracking of research subjects and their clinical visits. This will involve the coordination of calendars, surgical schedules, clinical schedules, and data derived from the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Calling research subjects to schedule and coordinate prospective collection of blood and tissue will be necessary. Data extraction and collection from the EMR will be necessary as defined by specific research protocols.
