Position Summary
The Clinical Research Participant Coordinator is responsible for research participant management and data collection for a variety of complex clinical research protocols, including leading efforts in gathering, compiling, and reporting data. The Clinical Research Participant Coordinator facilitates the integration of research activities into the clinical care environment, conveying information to a variety of individuals and groups.
The Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS)/Patient Navigator (PN) will work closely with the NC Communicable Disease Branch on Carolinas RESPOND, an NIH-funded research project. The purpose of the project is to evaluate how engagement in HIV care and prevention services can be improved among gender and sexual minority groups in the Charlotte and Midlands regions of North and South Carolina. Using mixed methods data gathered throughout the study’s timeline, this research aims to improve the local response to HIV by integrating Partner Services, social network recruitment, and HIV genetic cluster analysis.
This position will be responsible for intervening directly on recent HIV transmission networks within the Charlotte region using an adaptation of the CDC’s Social Network Strategy (SNS) in addition to routine Partner Services. This position will be responsible for conducting routine Partner Services as specified in the North Carolina Administrative Code and the supervision of the NC Communicable Disease Branch. The position will be expected to follow up with clients, members of networks their social and sexual and substance use partners, assist with field delivery therapy, input data and provide reports. The position will assist HIV positive clients in accessing or re-engaging in care if they have dropped out and assist HIV negative clients in accessing care for pre-exposure HIV prophylaxis. This position is also tasked with maintaining productive relationships to provide consultation, technical support and training resources to local health departments, clinics, hospitals, community-based organizations, non-traditional counseling and testing sites, and private providers; to investigate and consult on violations of North Carolina’s disease control measures. This employee must understand and adhere to all UNC and DHHS confidentiality policies related to data capture and storage. This is an essential public health classification that is based out of an office but requires one to travel frequently into rapidly changing field environments to locate, interview, and educate the public and other community members on disease control.
The position will be expected to understand the complexities of developing and growing HIV networks built through epidemiologic and molecular cluster surveillance data. They will then need to employ a multitude of disease prevention strategies to interrupt these networks including risk reduction counseling, linkage of HIV positive individuals to care and referring high-risk negative individuals within the contact network to highly effective HIV prevention services. The position will be responsible for developing and implementing the adapted Social Network Strategy (SNS) in conjunction with the Project Coordinator located at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. The goal of SNS is to encourage people to engage in HIV care and prevention services by leveraging people from within their social networks to recruit and refer their peers to the appropriate services. The position will be responsible for referring clients to the SNS program. Clients interested in becoming SNS Peer Recruiters will provide informed consent and receive short-term coaching by the study team for peer recruitment.
