Job Description

The Clinical and Community Translational Science (CCTS) program within the College of Health Solutions offers an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Research Laboratory Manager to join our Clinical Research Lab.  The ideal candidate is eager to play a leadership role in the CCTS Clinical Laboratory and closely collaborate with the clinical research hub to provide seamless coordination of CCTS services for researchers and research teams. The Research Laboratory Manger should be detail-oriented, collaborative-oriented, solution-oriented, and experienced in operating laboratory equipment, as well as lab management.

The Research Laboratory Manager will work under the direction of the CCTS Senior Director. The individual in this position is responsible for the daily oversight and operation of the clinical laboratory (biochemistry and molecular lab). Responsibilities include but are not limited to annual budget planning and estimates for service requests, equipment maintenance and calibration, operating standard and specialized laboratory equipment, and training related to safety standards related to all instructional and research activities within the clinical research laboratory.  The Research Laboratory Manager serves as the knowledge expert for the College of Health Solutions and CCTS regarding safety and safe lab practices and procedures.

Essential Duties

  • Manages and supervises daily operations of the biochemistry and molecular research conducted in the center to ensure ongoing processes and activities are provided cost-effectively, efficiently, and safely and confirm that they comply with applicable standards and regulations. 
  • Develops and/or modify existing procedures and practices for the operation of the wet lab following research protocols and standards. 
  • Manages and supervises purchasing and management of all laboratory equipment and supplies by identifying cost-sharing and/or volume discounts. 
  • Manages and supervises inventory/ordering system operations by establishing and maintaining par levels and restocking points for standard laboratory and office supplies. Review product specifications and recommends new/replacement equipment and kits; negotiate terms, prices, and conditions with suppliers/vendors. 
  • Prepares and distributes routine status and statistical reports of laboratory activities; identifies areas for operational improvements. 
  • Performs acceptance and protocol testing of new instruments to ensure understanding of proper use and procedure documentation to assist staff. 
  • Works closely and collaboratively with the Communications area to coordinate dissemination of informational materials and arrange facility tours and workshops to increase awareness and visibility of the center's activities. 
  • Assists in managing Bio-Safety lab (BSL2) activities and functions to provide ongoing effective and efficient operations. 
  • Serves as liaison between staff and administrative personnel by relaying pertinent information and discussing and resolving problems and issues. 
  • Maintains current knowledge of subject matter through participation in various educational programs, seminars, and workshops.
  • Develops and/or modify existing lab safety policy/procedures/operations following research protocols and standards.
  • Provides daily knowledge transfer through communications and direct training of staff and students in safe lab practices and high-quality equipment maintenance and composes these training materials.
  • Repairs/services laboratory equipment to ensure the equipment is always maintained to high operating standards and fully operational. 
  • Serves as liaison between University facilities and faculty members by relaying pertinent information on remodeling and new builds and discussing and resolving problems and issues to facilitate quick and efficient transitions. 
  • Manages and supervises chemical inventories by establishing and maintaining par levels and restocking points and ensuring that safety standards are met and appropriate Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are posted. 
  • Monitors budgets, review product specifications, and recommends purchases of laboratory equipment, kits, chemicals, consumables, and outside consultants for specialized equipment. 
  • Coordinates and reports all employee accidents that are lab or research-related.
  • Laboratory equipment calibration and maintenance.
  • Train students on standardized analysis techniques such as ELISA, RIA, spectrophotometers, and clinical analyzers.
  • Operating standard and specialized laboratory equipment high-performance liquid chromatography, thermocycler, semiquantitative real-time PCR, western blotting, tissue homogenization, electrophoresis, bomb calorimeter, freeze drier.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering or closely related field AND two (2) years laboratory management experience in a research setting; OR, Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering or closely related field AND four (4) years laboratory management experience in a large research laboratory setting; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience working in a CLIA lab

Working Environment

  • Lab equipment includes: BioTek Synergy H1 Hybrid Multi-modal reader, Meso Scale Diagnostics MESO Quick Plex, Perkin Elmer 1470 Wizard Gamma Counter, Roche Cobas Chemistry Analyzer, GC Mass Spec, AU480 Analyzer, Access II Analyzer.
  • Ability to push/pull/lift up to 25 pounds 
  • Potentially hazardous atmosphere with a risk of exposure to radiation and various health hazards such as blood-borne pathogens
