Job Summary

The Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) will perform tasks independently or with general direction to coordinate research protocols for clinical studies on navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) for neurotrauma patients, as directed by the Principal Investigator (PI).

The CRC will be provided training to Assistant CRCs in nTMS to support the data collection and operations of several concurrent clinical research studies under the guidelines of research protocols, UCSF and regulating agency policies.

The CRC’s duties may include, but will not be limited to:

  • Supporting the management and coordinating the tasks of multiple clinical research studies
  • Recruiting and screening potential participants for eligibility
  • Gathering and interpreting medical, surgical, and laboratory data regarding clinical trial subjects
  • Obtaining informed consent and conducting data collection with study participants, including administering TMS and clinical interviews.  The TMS are administered by the PI and by the CRC together. This involves gathering data (imaging, demographic, physiological, etc.) and interpreting/analyzing it for the purpose of the study.   
  • Coordinating with clinical staff to schedule and administer TMS studies.  As stated above, TMS are administered by the PI and by the CRC together.
  • Report study progress and results to PI.
  • Create, clean, update, and manage databases and reports.
  • Assisting with modifying and managing Institutional Review Board applications
  • Assuring compliance with all relevant regulatory agencies
  • Performing other duties as assigned

This position is primarily based at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital but also involves working occasionally at the UCSF Parnassus campus and off-site with outpatients, with options for some remote work. This position might be required to work on some weekends (estimated 6 times per year) in order to support enrollment efforts for the clinical studies.

Department Description

The Department of Neurosurgery at UCSF is one of the most pre-emanate neurosurgical departments in the country for clinical care, training and research. The department is number one academic research publication productivity and recently named as one of the top Neurosurgery Training Programs in the country. The Department is also ranked 4th in the nation for Neurosurgery & Neurology and is the number one Neurosurgery Department on the west coast (US News & World Report). Central administration at the Parnassus Heights location is responsible for directing all administrative functions of the department. The department’s Spine Group Team is currently located at UCSF Parnassus Campus.


Required Qualifications

  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience with navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) protocols
  • Excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments, and outside institutions and companies
  • Attention to detail, and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse groups including physicians, researchers, faculty, fellows, students, nurses, and support staff
  • Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, including the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population
  • Excellent computer skills and demonstrated proficiency working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience applying the following regulations and guidelines:
  • Good Clinical Practice Guidelines,
  • Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA),
  • The Protection of Human Research Subjects,
  • CHR regulations for recruitment and consent of research subjects
  • Knowledge of UCSF, CHR, confidentiality and HIPPA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.)
  • Knowledge of IRB procedures including study applications, renewals, and modifications
  • Knowledge or experience with basic clinical research techniques and methods, such as subject screening, consenting, and privacy practices (including CITI or similar certification)
  • Knowledge of database management and data analysis with some of the following: Excel, R, Stata, SAS/SPSS
  • Experience with electronic medical records
  • Experience working with patients or study subjects
  • 1+ years of clinical research experience, as a Research Assistant, Assistant CRC, or CRC
  • BA/BS degree in related biological science and 1+ years of an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Understanding of patient population to create rapport and a relationship, while also giving insight to what is realistic and appropriate for patient participation
  • Fluency in the usage of Committee of Human Research (CHR) online iMEDris system for submission, renewal, and modification of protocols through this system
