Job Description Summary:
We are seeking a clinical research assistant with an interest in working in a highly productive clinical research setting. This position will perform a variety of duties to support research studies related to obesity treatment and other chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and others. This position will support these research studies by assisting with conducting study outcomes, study participant recruitment, entry of study data, organization of study documents, and other areas of support to allow for the conduct of these research studies. This position involves interaction with study participants and other research study staff. This position may be assigned to assist with responsibilities across more than one research study, with opportunities to build and enhance skills to grow into additional duties and responsibilities.
This position will be to work on projects conducted by faculty in the Division of Physical Activity and Weight Management at the University of Kansas Medical Center. We are dedicated to conducting high-quality research focused on understanding, preventing, and treating obesity and related chronic health conditions, and to conduct this research in diverse populations. The faculty in the division have maintained continuous funding for over 25 years to support research in these areas with support from National Institutes of Health (NIH), a variety of industry partners, and private foundation grants. We believe in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach to research and strive to create a supportive, enriching environment for all team members.
Job Description:

Conditions of Employment

  • This position is based in Kansas City, KS but the candidate may be required to work periodically at the research site located in Lawrence, KS.

  • Able to work early mornings with the possibility of some evening work on occasion.

Required Qualifications

Education: Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of relevant post-secondary education/work experience that equals 2 years.

Work Experience

  • Evidence of appropriate training and experience to assist with conducting measurements such as height, weight, blood pressure, resting ECG, exercise testing, and body composition testing. This training and experience may have been obtained through education, employment, internship, or volunteer experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or exercise physiology or an appropriate related field preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Previous experience working in a clinical or research setting.

  • Phlebotomy experience.

  • Knowledge of ethical guidelines related to research involving human subjects.

  • Experience with data entry.

  • Additional professional certifications related to the required qualifications.

Skills

  • Able to adhere to research-specific protocols.

  • Willingness to learn additional research-related skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.

  • Computer skills that allow for successful use of common software such as MS Word, MS Excel, and others.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Job Duties

  • Assist with conducting assessments of participants enrolled in research studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies. These assessments include measures of weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate using ECG, cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, physical function, body composition, and others.

  • Assist with recruitment, enrollment, and retention of participants into research studies.

  • Assist with entry of research data into appropriate databases.

  • Assist with the organization of research study documents.

  • Scheduling of research study participants for assessment visits.

  • Work collaboratively with other staff.

  • Follow research protocols and be compliant with ethical guidelines and institutional policies.

  • Complete all required research training and undergo retraining as required by institutional policies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Principal Investigator to support additional research studies or special projects.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
