Summary of Job Duties:

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist works under minimal supervision to provide expertise not routinely available in the pharmacy staff. The abilities these individuals have may include a broad background in specific clinical areas (such as hematology/oncology and total parenteral nutrition), or the individual may have expertise in specific pharmacy management areas (such as information systems, drug utilization evaluation, or investigational drugs).
This pharmacist may participate in departmental and institutional committees upon request, and will be instrumental in developing and implementing clinical pharmacy services in assigned areas.
This position will develop policy and procedures when appropriate.  The clinical pharmacist will prioritize work appropriately, accept responsibility for work area, have good work awareness, assist others when work is completed, and work effectively with team/work groups and others to fulfill the UAMS Mission. They will adopt practices to improve work processes, enhance guest satisfaction and reduce wastes and costs, and participate in ongoing hospital performance assessment and process improvement.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 residency OR at least 3 years previous clinical experience in stem cell transplant and/or hematology/oncology
  • Certification as a licensed Registered Pharmacist by the State of Arkansas or eligible for licensure.

Preferred:

  • PharmD or MS
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency in oncology
  • Board certification
  • Five years of experience working in direct patient care
  • Experience in stem cell transplant and/or hematology/oncology


    Additional Information:

    Responsibilities:

    • Active participation in protocol and treatment plan development, formulary management, drug utilization reviews, and cost-savings initiatives as required by FACT accreditation standards 7.0 for the transplant program 
    • Involvement with clinical patient rounds with the medical team and providing optimal selection of pharmacologic agents and design of regimens to maximize therapeutic benefit and minimize toxicity
    • Entering and verification of chemo orders and protocols
    • Pharmacokinetic drug monitoring and dose adjustment 
    • Clinical drug monitoring daily with appropriate monitoring parameters for individual drugs and screening for drug interactions
    • Participation in discharge planning, transition of care medication reconciliation and the drug approval process
    • Providing a significant level of education to professionals and patients
    • Providing educational in-services to staff
    • Collaborating with the other clinical pharmacy specialists on a daily basis, and acting as the liaison between the myeloma/bone marrow transplant services and the inpatient and outpatient pharmacies
    • Precepting pharmacy students and residents
    • Other duties as assigned
