Job Summary
 

Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Operations, the Clinical Operations Manager (COM) is a registered nurse and leader who manages daily clinic operations of all activities related to patient centered healthcare in UChicago Student Wellness. Responsibilities include ensuring appropriate staffing and service to support excellent patient care and the smooth functioning clinical operations. The COM will oversee the daily work of the Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Medical Assistant (MA) and Phlebotomists in the management of patient flow, patient education, referrals and documentation in the medical record system.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily processes of the medical clinic within UChicago Student Wellness, with a primary focus on nursing and support services.
  • Provide education and administer competencies to clinic staff on protocols and policies related to care delivery.
  • Act as a facilitator for patient care coordination.
  • Responsible for the direct daily supervision of all nursing, clinical (non-providers). 
  • Organizes daily work flows for clerical and nursing staff to ensure optimal patient flows.
  • Creates a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation, and commitment.
  • Applies interpersonal skills to maintain open communication among staff members, other health care professionals and hospital departments.
  • Works in collaboration with the clinical staff, administrative staff, Medical Director and Director of Clinical Operations and others to strategically manage the clinic to provide high quality care.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Clinical Operations and the Clinical Operations Manager, provides behavioral performance feedback and conducts performance appraisals of clinical (non-provider) staff.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Clinical Operations, conducts training, competencies, orientation and performance evaluation of nursing staff.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Clinical Operations to develop and implement nursing policy and procedure.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Clinical Operations to develop and implement scheduling, registration and billing policy procedures.
  • Works with the Director of Clinical Operations to coordinate the risk management and compliance objectives, including, but not limited to, CLIA/CAP certification. Facilitates compliance with University of Chicago Medicine and University of Chicago policies and procedures as well as professional and governmental relations including healthcare organizations.
  • Demonstrates cost-conscious decision-making in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Operations in the determination, selection, and use of human resources, equipment and supplies.
  • Be able to perform the work of direct reports when necessary.
  • Collaborates with medical providers on communicating and assisting patients with appropriate treatment plans and provide guidance on therapies. Provides follow up with patients.
  • Coordinates the care of patients and provides guidance to clinical staff regarding practice guidelines.
  • Monitors quality and safety in regard to laboratory and point-of–care testing, and maintains regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinates the care of patients through the disease process.
  • Implements evaluation programs regarding the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice or organizational systems.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Master's degree.

Experience:

  • Five years of nursing experience.
  • Ambulatory or clinic experience is desirable.
  • Two years in formal/informal leadership role.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current Registered Nurse license in Illinois or ability to acquire a RN license in Illinois as a condition of employment.
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
  • Specialty certification is desirable.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Ability to Use Standard Office Equipment and knowledge of Microsoft suite.
  • Ability to condense complicated issues to simple summaries that can be understood by a variety of constituents.
  • Ability to develop and manage interpersonal relationships.

  • The COM must be able to manage multiple tasks under time constraints, model strong service orientation and promote team cooperation.

  • Ability to sit or stand for 4 hours or more.
  • Ability to use computers extensively for 4 hours or more.
  • Work may involve assisting patients in transferring to and from chairs, wheelchairs, exam tables and gurneys. Current lifting procedures must be followed. 
  • Duties performed require potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Occupational risk for exposure to infectious material and communicable diseases.
  • Required annual TB control training and/or other health screenings.
  • Scheduled work hours may change depending on clinic needs. While primarily open during regular business hours, some evening and weekend hours.
  • Work may be performed in varied locations inside/outside of the clinical setting including other campus locations.
