Clinical Nurse Pediatrics Operating Room (CLIN NURSE 2)
Job Summary
Registered Nurses in the Operating Room department at UC Davis Medical Center provide care to adult and pediatric patients with a variety of perioperative (medical surgical, critical care, emergent, perioperative) needs. Patient conditions include: Diagnosis amenable to surgical intervention; ASA 1 to ASA VI, which spans a 'normal healthy patient' through a 'declared brain-dead patient whose organs are being removed for donor purposes.
Perioperative nurses provide surgical patient care by assessing, planning, and implementing the nursing care patients receive before, during and after surgery. These activities include patient assessment, creating and maintaining a sterile and safe surgical environment, pre- and post-operative patient education, monitoring the patient's physical and emotional well-being, and integrating and coordinating patient care throughout the surgical care continuum. Perioperative nurses assume the following roles: (1) Circulating Nurse - who works outside of the sterile field and is responsible for managing the nursing care within the O.R. by observing the surgical team from a broad perspective and assisting the team in creating and maintaining a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment [reference UCDH OR/SDSC Policy ID C-5], and (2) Scrub Nurse-who works directly with the surgeon within the sterile field by passing instruments, sponges, and other items needed during the surgical procedure [reference UCDH Perioperative Services Structure Standards]. This position will be assigned work in the Main Operating Room, Children's Surgery Center, Same Day Surgery Center, University Tower Surgery Suite or other operating room location.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 6 months of recent RN experience in scrubbing and circulating complex surgical procedures.
  • Recent RN experience in Pediatrics Operating Room.
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Possession of current California RN License.
  • CPR certification.
  • Ability to load, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing.
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates accountability and professionalism.
  • Adapts to change in a positive, professional, and productive manner.
  • Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation.
  • Knowledge of performance improvement and evidence-based practice.
  • Basic computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • CNOR certification

Department Description
The Main Operating Room has 24 operating rooms, Children's Surgery Center has 6 operating rooms and Same Day Surgery Center has 4 operating rooms. Most of the surgical procedures performed tend to be complex. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, patient care is provided to a wide range of surgical services including: Orthopedics, Otolaryngology, Plastics, Vascular, Cardiac, Neurosurgery, Thoracic, Burn, Trauma, Gyn, Urology, Pediatrics, Transplant, and General Surgery.
