CLINICAL NURSE EDUCATOR, CONTINUOUS RENAL REPLACEMENT THERAPY (CRRT)/DIALYSIS AND ECMO

CLINICAL NURSE EDUCATOR (CNE), for Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)/Dialysis and ECMO.

Works with and reports to the Program Operations Manager to provide education to staff across the clinical spectrum at Harborview Medical Center (HMC) related to CRRT/Dialysis and ECMO. This position will initially focus on the implementation of the CRRT in-house program. As this program is established and moves to a maintenance phase, responsibilities will include ECMO education.

The Educator will:

· Collaborate with the Program Operations Manager and ECMO Manager to ensure that staff are provided continuing education related to CRRT/ECMO QI.

· Collaborate with the HMC Professional Development and Nursing Excellence (PDNE) department to ensure nursing continued competence and compliance in meeting the needs for these complex patients on CRRT/ECMO.

· Support the Emergency Department, Operative Services, Critical Care, Acute Care, and other areas as needed with educational uses of CRRT/ECMO.

CRRT/DAILYSIS JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Initial focus will be developing an educational curriculum supporting the CRRT program at HMC. This will include both didactic and hands on education provided to current eligible nursing staff.

Planning, coordinating, and implementing an in-house CRRT education program including, but not limited to:

· Lead, develop and administration of the internalization of CRRT program in collaboration with Program Manager.

· Develop curriculum and coordinate initial and ongoing CRRT education for critical care nurses.

· Serve as the clinical expert, providing ongoing staff support and continuing education to ensure quality and cost-effective patient care outcomes.

· Develop and maintain CRRT nursing policies and procedures.

· Develop evaluation tools reflecting ongoing competency and safe practice in accordance with national guidelines, regulatory requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations.

· Verify staff competencies and provide annual competency testing.

· Maintains current clinical knowledge of CRRT therapy and ensures that clinical training and education needs are met in accordance with national guidelines, as well as OSHA, CMS, federal, state, and local regulations.

· Participate in CRRT related auditing and quality improvement projects.

ECMO JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBLITIES:

The qualified candidate will function as the education leader for the Extracorporeal Life Support program at HMC. These duties involve the initial and ongoing training of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Specialist Nurses and Respiratory Therapists at HMC. Training will be in collaboration with the PDNE department to ensure competency and regulatory compliance toward this complex therapy.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

· Responsible for the educational needs of the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program.

· Continues current curriculum and coordinates initial and ongoing ECMO education for critical care nurses.

· Provides ongoing competency and safe practice in accordance with national guidelines, regulatory requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations.

· Serve as the clinical expert, providing ongoing staff support and continuing education to ensure quality and cost-effective patient care outcomes.

· Develop and maintain ECMO nursing policies and procedures.

· Provide leadership support to ensure safe practice and continued operation of the program.

· Provides therapy, documentation, and?operation support to patient care staff.

· Maintains current clinical knowledge of ECMO therapy and?ensures?that clinical training and education needs are met in accordance with national guidelines, as well as OSHA, CMS, federal, state, and local?regulations.?

· Participate in ECMO related auditing and quality improvement projects.

· Serves as a liaison, in collaboration with the Manager, between ECMO Specialists, Nursing, Respiratory Care, Department Leadership, Physicians, and Hospital Administration.

· Assists in facilitation in the management of the ECMO patient population to promote efficient, cost effective, quality care to patients, families, staff, and the institution.

· Ensures compliance with state, federal, organizational guidelines, and other regulatory agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

· Current WA State RN license.

· Bachelor's degree in Nursing; MN/MSN degree preferred.

· Minimum three years ICU experience.

· Minimum two years CRRT experience, with expertise in renal function, renal pathologies, hemodynamics. CRRT/Dialysis teaching or mentorship experience desired.

· Minimum two years leadership experience, e.g., nurse manager/assistant manager, charge, preceptor, program development

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

· CRRT and ECMO experience.

· Experience with shared governance model of nursing practice.

· Experience in teaching the adult learner with sound knowledge of adult learning theory and ability to present material to differing levels of base knowledge from novice to professional experience.

· Expertise with the Baxter PrimFlex and PrisMax CRRT machine, setup, priming, and initiation of Renal Replacement Therapy, and external devices

· Advanced understanding of renal anatomy, physiology, and renal pathophysiology, renal replacement therapy.

· Strong leadership abilities demonstrated through communication, education, and management.

· Experience with the setup, priming, initiation, and troubleshooting of Maquet Cardiohelp based ECMO system.

· Expertise in the provision of ECMO relating to hemodynamics, pulmonary physiology/pathologies.

· Thorough knowledge with both ventilatory and cardiac supportive devices.

· Experience with both veno-arterial and veno-venous modes of ECMO support.

· Demonstrated knowledge of ELSO Guidelines for ECMO programs.

· Strong leadership abilities and interpersonal skills demonstrated through communication, education, and management.

· Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
