General Statement
MSU Student Health Services (SHS) is a AAAHC accredited outpatient clinic that serves the diverse needs of the MSU student body (16,000+ students). SHS provides direct patient care through primary and acute care, dental, and pharmacy services. Student Health Services is primarily funded by a student fee model, aimed at reducing barriers to health care access and providing timely and relevant care for MSU students. Student Health Services is part of the Student Wellness area, within the Division of Student Success. Student Health Services will be housed in the new Student Wellness Center, a 185,000 square foot facility slated to open spring 2024. The new facility will be home to Student Health Services, Counseling & Psychological Services, Health Advancement and Campus Recreation. The facility will enhance the integrated and holistic model of student health and wellness at MSU.
The Lab Technician will be primarily responsible for performing clinical laboratory studies in the areas of bacteriology, serology, hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, parasitology, and immunology.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform clinical laboratory studies in the areas of bacteriology, serology, hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, parasitology, and immunology.
  • Utilize all laboratory instruments including automated cell counters, chemistry analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, spectrophotometers, automated EIA instruments and rapid testing systems.
  • Communicate with other health-care personnel on the applications and validity of laboratory data, laboratory policies and operations, and detailed information about all areas of the laboratory. Ability to communicate effectively with medical as well as non-medical personnel.
  • Collect samples: perform venipuncture for hematology, chemistry, and serology. Collect throat and urine specimens for routine microbiological examination. Instruct patients on the proper procedure for collection of samples.
  • Share Saturday and Sunday morning coverage (primarily culture sensitivities) with 1-2 other Clinical Laboratory Scientists.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree in medical laboratory science or similar major that includes an internship with an accredited hospital clinical laboratory.
  • Current certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
  • Current Montana License to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of clinical laboratory principles related to practices and techniques involving bacteriology, serology, hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, parasitology, immunology, and phlebotomy.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of all laboratory instruments including automated cell counters, chemistry analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, spectrophotometers, automated EIA instruments, and rapid testing systems.
  • Recent experience working as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a CLIA designated “high complexity” clinical laboratory.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
    Position Requirements:
    • Current Montana License to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist.
    • Current certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
