Scope of Job
To provide overall management of operations, activities and resources of the clinical laboratory. Assures high quality, cost-effective diagnostic services are provided in a timely manner. 
Description of Duties
• Provides overall management of activities and resources of the clinical laboratory. 
• Plans and organizes the operations of the clinical laboratory. 
• Ensures the safe operation of all equipment and oversees the proper distribution and maintenance of supplies and equipment in departmental laboratories or related areas and techniques of normally used equipment and materials. 
• Is accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site telephone or electronic support. 
• Provides day-to-day supervision of personnel performing high complexity testing in compliance with CLIA, CAP, and COLA
• Must be on-site to provide direct supervision when high complexity testing is performed. 
• Monitors test analyses and specimen examination to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. Tracks and documents all deviations from SOPs and resolves SOP deviations with personnel. 
• Responsible for supervising the execution of all daily, weekly, monthly preventative maintenance tasks for all lab equipment according to SOP. Verifies that all tasks are documented and resolve any issues either on-site or with manufacturer. 
• Serves as the laboratory primary operator for all high complexity testing, trains qualified staff in high complexity testing, reviews all testing data for validation and execution prior to reporting. 
• Ensures that all daily clinical testing results are certified prior to reporting. 
• Resolves technical and complex problems and ensures corrective actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. 
• Ensures patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly. 
• Provides orientation to all testing personnel according to lab SOPs, and validates documentation of completion in compliance with CLIA, COLA, and GLP requirements. 
• Prepares weekly reports for the laboratory director on sample load and testing, personnel performing high complexity testing receipt, processing, reporting, and general execution of assays in compliance with CLIA, CAP, and COLA
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a closely related field from an accredited university.
Preferred Education
Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications
None.
Required Experience
• Three (3) years of experience in a clinical laboratory or laboratory, to include PCR and RT-PCR, and experience in cellular biology experience, such as cell culturing, pathogen cultivation, nucleic acid extraction and genetic manipulation and supervisory experience, or 
• Five (5) years of the required experience with an Associate Degree in a field related to the work performed, or a comparable combination of education and experience.

Equipment
Thorough knowledge of special equipment used in the field of clinical diagnostics. 
Knowledge of statistical concepts and methods and their application to result analysis, of measurement, testing, and evaluation, and of clinical methods, principles, techniques, and philosophies. Skilled in conducting qualitative and quantitative testing and in using computers, software, and statistical tools and programs. Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems. Experience with standard clinical laboratory equipment. 
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
